Latino Heritage month was established to celebrate the
Latino culture and the Latino influences
in the United States.
And it starts on September 15.
And it's historically significant because many
countries in Latin America, they got their independence on
September 15.
Well, the street fair will just allow people to come and
see a little bit of the culture.
They can go to each of the different tables and seem a
little bit about each country, South and Central America.
There's food here that they can try.
It gets people more interested in knowing a little bit about
the background of the language that they're studying.
This is just one of the activities that the Latino
Student Association does.
It's here to promote diversity, and we're just
giving a brief look at all the different countries that
inhabit Latin America.
So we had students participate from their Spanish classes,
and they were to create posters and stuff.
And then we're here to show it off to
everybody on the campus.
The Latino Street Fair is a way for students to learn more
about the different countries in Latin and Central America,
and to help students understand the different ways
that we can be connected to cultures other than our own,
and how to appreciate people who are different from us.
We try to get the students expand more and go beyond
stereotypes.
So that people here at EKU, people that might not be
exposed, to Latinos learn a little bit more about Latinos
and the diversity within the Latino culture.
And not only--
but there are many, many, many places where they come from so
that's what we tried to do.
We tried to include the students, we tried to include
all the staff and professors and everything.
So it's a community event.
