Can you tell me, what kind of job...
were you involved with before?
Can you tell me?
'I was a...
... pilot.'
All right. Let's say it again.
'I was a pilot.'
A pilot, correct. Now I think...
that's on your "about me" page.
[I was a pilot before my injury.]
The essence of humans...
is the ability to communicate...
and if that is suddenly taken from you...
it is often devastating to the individual...
and to the individual's loved ones.
Mmm, mmm, mmm.
How are you?
I...
You're loosing it, let's try it again.
How are you? How are you?
How are you?
[Water] Water.
Now write the word...
and then say the word...
and then listen to the word.
Ok.
[Water]
When you got out of bed this morning you...
went into the bathroom and took a...
[Shower] Shower.
We don't really know a hundred percent...
what he understands and what...
he doesn't understand.
When this was evolving at the beginning...
my major concern was physical things.
Would he be able to move his hand?
Would he be able to move his leg?
And as the time goes by...
those things have dropped down...
on my list of importance.
[Restaurants]
[I want to go to Five Guys]
He's always been a very social person.
He's been a person that has a good joke or...
something he always wants to say...
and he's not able to do that now.
and you see the frustration...
when he gets one of those thoughts...
in his mind that he wants to say...
and he just can't do it.
What is the little dog's name?
Ok: 'the little dog is Tuesday.'
'The little dog is Tuesday...'
The one question we are frequently asked is...
'If my stroke survivor uses technology...
does that mean then that they will not speak?'
'Or will it slow down their recovery in speech?'
[Phone]
And we tell them, no it won't...
and we have found that the use of the technology...
actually encourages them to speak.
Sebastian... Sebastian...
One of the first things that he consistantly...
was able to say was 'Sebastian'...
which is the golden retriever's name.
Saying a word like Sebastian...
means that he should be able to say other words...
that are much more easier to say.
We've been told a lot of information during this...
and if we believed everything that we were told...
we probably would have never even expected...
any kind of goals, or anything to happen...
for him to get better.
But we're not going to accept that.
At first we thought, for a long period of time...
that he'd be incognant his entire life.
That's not the case.
We we're told his legs and his arms won't move.
But hey, his leg is supporting him now.
And who knows, we may get more.
We were told he wouldn't be able to speak.
There's things he can say today and...
we're hoping and we think he can say things in the future.
I think technology ultimately is going to...
at some point improve his quality of life.
An example of that is the Proloquo2Go software.
It gave him an avenue to communicate...
that he would've had in no other way...
and does a tremendous job.
Our day revolves around what...
we can do to make him better.
the three of us work all day.
It's a challenge for all of us...
it's a challenge for his friends...
it's a challenge for everyone.
So, we can't change that...
all we can do is deal with life the way it is...
and that's what we're doing.
