Welcome to WIRE. We'll brief the local and international news of the week so that you
can be more informed during your busy schedule.
On Wednesday, Istanbul Turkey experienced a freak wind-storm that injured 31 people
and caused wide spread damage to the city. The powerful 62 mile per hour winds ripped
the roofs off of 350 buildings and downed more than 100 trees. A blockbuster Hollywood
film set for the new James Bond movie, ironically named "Skyfall" was also destroyed. The
storm was caused by a strong southwesterly wind known in Turkey as lodos.
On Thursday, India successfully tested the launch of a long-range ballistic missile called
the Agni 5, or "fire" in Hindi. The Obama administration took particular interest in
the missile because it is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, adding India to the list
of countries that have long range nuclear capabilities, along with Britain, China, France,
Russia, Israel and the US. The missile enables the Indian military, for the first time, to
reach China's most important citiesâ Beijing and Shanghai, with a nuclear attack. Recently,
India's military has faced many internal scandals, yet defense officials have pushed
ahead with a major arms buying spree that has made India the world's biggest weapons
importer.
The Marine Corp opened a combat school in Quantico, Virginia to women allowing for
the first time, female members of the front-line fighting force to be specifically groomed
for direct combat roles. Currently, the school is seeking out female volunteers to attend
the Infantry Officers Course in Quantico. This is such a controversial and monumental
change because the Marine Corp previously excluded female marines from the program,
and trained them for supporting roles such as logistics, personnel administration and
aircraft maintenance.
