AVT: Well, what else do you see?
RACHEL: I see... many... I see.. castle.
AVT: You do? Where? Where's the castle?
AVT: What kind of castle is it? Sand castle.
R: Sand castle. AVT: Uh-huh. Did those two little boys build the sand castle?
R: Uh-huh. AVT: I think they did!
AVT: Have you ever built a sand castle?
AVT: Good. Did you decorate it?
AVT: Did you decorate it? Look, let me show you.
[knock on door] AVT: Come in. R: Who's it?
AVT: Thank you very much. Okay... see?
AVT: This is Barney. He made a sand castle.
R: Um, and he has to swim.
AVT: And then, he decorated it.
AVT: See? It's not decorated here. But he found some seashells and some seaweed, and a feather from a seagull and he decorated it.
AVT: He decorated the sea-- the sand castle.
R: I made a decorated bridge. AVT: You decorated the bridge? How did you decorate it?
R: I made [can't hear this part] and the rocks, and a moat. AVT: A moat? You made a moat?
AVT: You made a moat around the castle? R: Yes, a circle.
AVT: Nice, right, it's called a "moat" when it's filled up with water.
R: I make it square. AVT: You what? R: I make it sqaure, too.
AVT: Oh, a sqaure moat. Did you have a square castle and a square moat?
R: I made a big circle
AVT: Did you make -- did you make two sand castles?
R: Um, I made, uh, one! AVT: Oh, you just made one? Okay.
AVT: Um, well, how did you decorate your sand castle? Did you decorate it with seashells?
R: No. AVT: No? How did you decorate it? What did you decorate it with?
R: I decorated with... AVT: See the sticks?
AVT: See, Barney -- let's look at this guy.
AVT: Picked up some sticks, and he picked up some sea shells
R: I did not put any sea shells. AVT: Oh, you didn't put any sea shells on your sand castle?
R: I forgot. AVT: Oh, you forgot. Okay.
AVT: And he found... Oh! They're not gonna pick up the crab!
AVT: Noo... they'll pinch you with their claws!
AVT: Did you see any crabs? R: Noo!
AVT: Um, see he got a lot of things in his bucket to decorate.
AVT: He found some seaweed, he found a feather, and he's decorating the sand castle.
AVT: Okay...
AVT: Rachel, I'm gonna give you some sentences, and you tell me what I'm talking about.
AVT: Mom, you might wanna right these down on the back. There all gonna be complex sentences.
AVT: Rachel, after the lady put her pink and green beach towel on the sand...
AVT, cont.: ...she lay down.
AVT: Right! That's exactly right!
AVT: After the lady put her pink and green beach towel on the sand, she lay down.
AVT: That's what I said.
AVT: Okay, what's she doing? R: Lying down.
AVT: Okay, alright. Why is she lying down on the beach towel?
R: To rest. AVT: To rest? Is she resting, Mommy? What is she doing?
MOMMY: I think she's trying to get a suntan.
AVT: I think she's trying to get a suntan!
AVT: Put some lotion on her arms, and on her legs, and on her face
AVT: She's trying to get a suntan.
AVT: Do you have a suntan? You do. R: I have it. AVT: You have a suntan.
AVT: Do I have a suntan? R: No.
AVT: Right. No, I don't! I haven't been out in the sun this summer.
AVT: I haven't -- I haven't laid down on my beach towel and... sunning.
AVT: Okay. What do you wear when you do that? What do you wear when you take a sun bath?
AVT: She's taking a sun bath. What do you wear? What do you think she's wearing?
R: A swim suit. AVT: Okay. Good. [Mommy and AVT have unintelligible conversation]
AVT: Do you wear a coat? R: No.
AVT: No! R: A t-shirt... and swim suit.
AVT: A swim suit. [emphasizes /t/ sound] R: and t-shirt
AVT: And a t-shirt? R: To cover swim suit. To cover swim suit.
AVT: On top of the swim suit? R: A t-shirt. A t-shirt.
AVT: You wear a t-shirt over your swim suit?
