We got monsters, musics, and dramas. Are you ready for an iced tall glass of K-crunch? UGH!!
[K-Crunch Funky 80s Theme song]
It's August 2011 and we've already review a bunch of huge kpop songs via our Music Monday
Today we're going to review some lesser known songs, starting with Sunny Hill's "Pray."
This video came out August 4th and is really one of the most
profound music videos we've seen in Korea.
Basically a monster like person is freed from their cage by a really beautiful girl
only to be reimprisoned and experimented on. This video is not for the weak of heart.
He gazes lovingly at his beautiful captor while being horribly experimented on,
not really understanding that she is the monster in this situation.
After looking in a mirror, he realizes how ugly he actually is,
[suspense music]
AHHHHHH!!!!!
He tries to flee, only to be recaptured again by putting his trust in the beautiful lady.
As he lies on the ground, loosing consciousness from being shot with a tranq dart,
a single tear rolls down his monster eye.
[sad music]
What are you doing?
I'm trying to cry.
You're not doing a great job at it. I've seen this in dramas, it works.
Nope, no. No.
Now, I don't want to say anymore because I don't want to give away the end of the video.
He dies. Simon what the hell!!!
Now, it actually has a lot more depth to it than our brief overview suggests,
so we definitely recommend you check it out. You know it doesn't have
beautiful people doing sexy things, that you want to do sexy things to,
not that I feel that way about sexy kpop videos--
BUBBLE BUBBLE BUBBLE POP, BUBBLE BUBBLE POP POP!
Now it's a much slower song and it has a more profound message,
so it's more like an R&B song than it is a kpop song,
we really feel like this video is so unique
since the directors went for a new cinematic style.
We finally have a kpop video, that you can't fap to.
GO AHEAD! TRY! Challenge accepted…challenge failed.
Our second video is from a band that we don't really know how to pronounce.
They're cho-co-lat. I thought they were the French word for chocolate,
but then there is a capital "C" in the middle and there is no "E",
so do you emphasize the "C", is it cho-CO-lat, or CHO-CO--I don't even know.
Anyhow, choColat has been getting a lot of attention because they're BI-RACIAL
which is getting a lot of people upset because in an ideal world,
you shouldn't care about what race they are…but this is kpop,
which is predomitenly Korean, so this is one step close to kpop
being more international. The girls still look and sing in Korean,
so is it really that international…I dunno…
What we do know is that they're creating a lot of interest
internationally because they're BI-RACIAL,
even before their video was released.
WAIT! Did we mention that they actually have a song out?
Yeah…it's okay…..but they're BI-RACIAL!!!
Our third video is from a rookie group called Stellar,
who really impressed us by having a normal name.
Really. There is like, no silent Q in there,
or a silly acronym for something…
are you sure there isn't something hidden in there that we don't know about?
I am suspicious.
The music video for Rocket Girl was released August 23rd
and it's filled with so much awesomeness that we don't even know where to begin.
And by awesomeness we mean that kind of awe you feel when you watch
a really awkward movie like "Battlefield Earth".
It's just so….weird. In an unintentionally cool way.
The video begins with a bunch of young Korean people
wearing those sunglasses that old people wear
onto of their glasses to protect the sides of their eyes.
And then there are two DJs with a giant Zelda heart watching a guy take a nap.
Then Stellar proceed to break into a building armed
by the most incompetent bodyguards you have ever seen, in the history of forever.
So you just shot a girl with perhaps the loudest laser gun ever,
and then you enter a room with 7 people, shoot 2 of them,
while the other 5 just stand in line and wait to be shot.
[anime theme song]
MUAHAHHA! These heels are super efficient for sneaking.
[clack clack clack]
FREEZE!!!!
Uh. My eyes are watering again.
I SAID FREEZE!
hooh.
*KAKKAWWW*
huh? OH GAWD YOU HAVE A GUN!!! That's right!
WAIT! I will shoot you!
I have A BANANA!
It's not even peeled.
You raise a valid argument.
*BAM BAM BAM SHOOT HIM LIKE A WATERMELON!*
GOING TO SNEEEAAK!
[Music ends]
Then the song stops for 50 seconds while we watch a guy wake up from a nap.
I love it when my music videos stop playing music,
especially to watch a guy veryyy slowly put on his sunglasses.
This better be important. OH WAIT!!!
It's Eric from Shinhwa who made a cameo in Teen Top's "Supaluv".
You love them rookie groups Eric, don't cha?
You just LOVE them.
Anyhow, once Eric wakes up from his epic nap,
he drops a totally awesome rap line.
"I need a rocket. I need a rocket spaceship."
Wow. I mean, who doesn't want a rocket spaceship?
I do. In fact, the line is so great that he repeats it 3 more times
and then brings back all the dead bodyguards to life
in hopes that they will provide him with this rocket spaceship.
Powerful words, from a powerful man.
And then, getting back to the song, everyone starts dancing
and singing together, clearly forgetting about the fact
that they were just shot
and clearly pistol whipped a couple minutes earlier,
while Eric desperately tries to figure out whether he wants his sunglasses ON or OFF.
It's funny how music can brings us all together and make us forget
our previous quarrels and concussions.
Moving on to Korean dramas. August 18th marked the ending of Heartstrings.
This romantic drama is set around the quarrels between Kyu-won,
a cute but passionate traditional Korean musician
and Shin, the super hot and dreamy, but cold,
lead singer and guitar player to a Korean Indie band.
Recognize these characters from somewhere?
Yup! Well besides being from C.N Blue,
both recently acted together in the drama "You're Beautiful"
and they were both musicians as well.
Did I mention that I totally love that drama?
[cheering crowds]
I will promise you, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah idon'tknowthewords….
I WILL PROMISE YOU--
To be honest, I thought the first few episode
were way to spread out amongst several different characters.
I mean, I'm just getting to know the main characters
and instead of getting to know their isms and their lives,
my attention is being spread out to all these different sub-characters
including a super-prissy a-hole ballerina character.
You have not a single redeeming quality, so the guy that likes you,
must be the dumbest guy on the whole planet.
[acoustic strumming]
I love you.
You're gross.
I love you.
Do you have any food?
I love you.
You're still gross.
How about now?
OPPA!!
YEA!!!
Ummm..no wait, you're still gross.
and then u have sub plot buried upon sub plot,
mixed with love interests from professors, and sub professors…
it's like, love octagons and, ok…slow down it's only episode 2.
Truthfully, I was really disappointed with this drama
and I almost quit several times,
but it does tend to pick up around episode 4.
Next up is "Protect the Boss" which started August 3rd,
ahem. This drama is OSM!
Eun Sol is a super strong, literally ***-kicking lead,
who will take no nonsense from anyone.
What's this? A non-cutey, non-aegyo female lead character
who isn't pretending to be a boy?!
INCONCEIVABLE!
You know those long, super rambley speeches female characters seem to put up with
while their mouths hang ajar and their eyes stay in unblinking horror?
Well, if you're sick of that, you're in luck with this drama,
You will see no more of that, and you will not have to do this to your laptop.
Don't start crying! Just kill her! KILL HER!
Or this
Seriously?!?!
Or this
STRANGLE….ERRRRPPFFF!!
All the stuff that you want to do while watching a drama,
Eun Sol will do it for you,
From kicking high school boy butt to save a friend,
to completely PWNING and embarrassing a perverted Korean boss,
She will do it for you, and she will do it in style.
She will absolutely speak her mind, without giving long, awkward speeches.
Well done Eun Sol. I love you!
But enough about girl power.
There are also two notable male leads in this drama,
Ju Hun, who bears more than a few similarities to another drama
but I just can't put my finger on who could it be
IT'S FROM SECRET GARDEN!
Throw in a strong female lead, and you've got yourself a complete Secret Garden package,
But though the characters might bear similar traits,
they're not exactly the same.
Oh yeah! And there's one more extremely important character I forgot to mention:
Did I tell you that Jaejoong, AKA Hero from JYJ is in this?
HEY HEY! Where are you going?
Wait till I finish speaking before you go off to ogle him!
Anyways, he's actually a surprisingly awesome actor,
and I can see that you're not even paying attention to me.
Wait a second, just wait. Don't you want to hear about the plot?
Guise? Hey?! Well, anyways,
It's a totally awesome drama, and I recommend you check it out.
Go wipe that milk moustache off your face!
You just got served a tall glass of K Crunch!
