joining us once again is dave's siren edge of sports dot com also sports
editor at the nation that gave a couple of things to talk about uh... today
number one he wrote this article did shaquille o'neill just box out mia band
in the article you outlined how newark's only kind of big uh... movie theater
which is called on by shaquille o'neill
hold a scheduled showing of the documentary about mumia abu jamal who
much of our audience is probably familiar with if not he spent the last
three decades not only in prison but
arguing what he says is um... uh... uh... lack of app of a good case in a
proper prosecution against him
in the alleged shooting of police officer daniel faulkner now what do you
know about the connection between shaquille o'neill the ownership of the
theater
and that the decision to poll that's that showing of the movie
well first of all let me be clear i've spent several weeks attempting to get
comments from shaquille o'neill
uh... i work every contact that even had some direct contact information for
shack in cell
was not able to get so much as as statements
but there is enough that i knew in my editors knew circumstantially that made
this a story that we felt like we
needed the politics
because this is a free speech story this is not a story about me uh... his guilt
or innocence it's a story about whether or not the city of newark would have
access
to a documentary that had been scheduled and that was ready for
or a serious audience
uh... in newark
now
here's what we know for sure
shaquille o'neill cones the theater
uh... shaquille o'neill also is someone who's our volunteer sworn in sheriff in
multiple cities in miami and los angeles and he'd used to do ride alongs in baton
rouge louisiana where he went to college adele l_s_u_
we also know that you feel you know was cited for police brutality in one of
those ride alongs in baton rouge for sticking somebody's head in the toilet
and flushing it repeatedly
now what else do we know we know that you kill you know is from newark space
from several places because his fathers as an army guy at ivy traveled around a
great deal but he spent a lot of his formative years in newark
and we also know that you feel o'neill's chief of security slash manager
uh... is along time former new york police officer
and so we know that the movie was scheduled
we know that there was a team meeting
that bob shaquille o'neill in the theater managements
and then we know that the film of was killed
the film was gonna show in newark and then it wasn't and this raises a lot of
questions not the least of which is should the people of newark beaded
ninety any film
because an owner of the let's forget about a few of the offer saket
just because the owner of a theater find something objectionable
uh... should he be have been allowed to pull something that had already been
schedule
so to me there there's some very troubling issues here
that even though well beyond that that the actuality of news case
and shaquille o'neill as a famous celebrity yeah i mean i think the
details of mir's cancer are almost secondary right because as we know
you can if you believe a lot of the that a lot of the circumstances of that
prosecution were not in order that's a very separate issue from whether you
believe or don't believe that he did the act of which he is accused in that kind
of a whole separate issues so really the issue is i guess dave uh... arbor maybe
when you don't think i'm right about that you know i do but the only thing i
would add it is
there's also a separation between the f_b_i_ on that you look at this year's
and this particular film
uh... this particular film long-distance revolutionary is not about the case
but it's very specifically
about the kind of journalism that move me has been able to do behind bars for
the last thirty years
which to me makes it even
and extra layer of agree distance then we'd be alts
and i should say in the interests of full disclosure that i'm one of the
talking heads in the movie because of some interaction i've had written to me
about the inner about the intersection of sports and politics
so bottom line let's assume
that because it's a kilo neil's that we don't know this but because it's a kills
personal feelings are about the showing of this film
he killed at the screening of it
ultimately even if you give you personally believe
that the interest of newark residents are not being served by this movie not
being shown
what really is the allegation given that it's a private movie theater and
management ultimately can make whatever call they want right
yet i'm in the number one allegation and would be that
baby never should scheduled in the first place that
that and they're being very derelict in their basic functioning as a theater
and keep in mind it's the only movie theaters the only cineplex in all of the
work
and i think with that comes a certain public trust as well
and so that people think wow we're not only get just gonna get the latest pics
are back that stick movie
by or by hartwell
but we're actually going to get a documentary day
uh... mike the airlines and my dedicate our our community
and today they have that holt
uh... n_e_a_ sits at their pets and their colby shortening the work is
already a city
that's been starts so much by
industrial act by police brutality
by flight and on top of all of that uh... you not be able to see a films
just because uh... shaquille o'neill disagrees with it
uh... is something that i think is a pretty bitter pill for people that
swallowing
given that shaquille o'neill considers himself a sign of new work that's a
quote
uh... that is how he has described himself it would be nice to see if he
would just
makes some sort of public statement as to that
whether or not
he had this film polled
we're gonna be watching for that statement
