Welcome to "Preparing your course for Quality Matters review." In this section, we will
cover how to add relevant information to your Syllabus and Policies section.
It is not enough just to have the syllabus. Your policies and statements need to be broken
out into sections so students can find them easily, and in a least two places
Our example is from the Quality Matters Recognized course AML 2020.
There is a menu item where all "Syllabus and Policies" information is located.
In addition, this course's "Getting Started" unit, within the "Assignments" folder, there
is a convenient course link titled "Syllabus and Policies" when this course link is clicked
this link leads to the Syllabus and Policies Section.
If a student clicks either the course link or the menu item, they we be directed to the
same location with the same information.
In this section, the first thing a student will see is a PDF of the syllabus.
Next is a PDF of the course calendar, the calendar has all important dates, assignments,
and test.
In this course the first break out folder is of the reading list. This is a list of
all required reading material. Students must read in order to complete assignments and
essays for this course. This list is also useful for students to print and place in
their textbook or work ahead. This folder is a great place to put an "Additional Resource"
folder. Any material not required or is extra study materials are located in additional
resources.
The second folder contains the Course Objective chart. This objective chart should also be
in your syllabus. This chart shows how the course objectives align with the weekly objectives
and is broken down by each week.
The Rubrics folder is next. This folder has all Rubrics used for grading criteria. Students
can visit this folder to find out what to expect for each assignment, the criteria,
and grade breakdown.
The Class rules folder is an important folder. This folder contains expiations of student
behavior and actions. It also states the consequence.
All courses in blackboard require Technology. The Technology Requirements folder state all
required technology a student must have in order to complete the course successfully.
Next is the methods of evaluation. This comes straight form the syllabus. This breaks down
all the assignments in the course and how many points each are worth. It also lets a
student know how many points are possible in the course as well as what grade the points
translate to.
The next section is information for students with Disabilities. This Item states whom a
student can contact and a hyperlink that leads to more information about the Office for Students
with Disabilities (OSD)
. LSSC has many online student services. This next gives students hyperlinks as well as
a brief description of each service.
Netiquette is an important topic, these are rules students should follow in an online
environment such as not using all caps which is considered yelling. The hyper link leads
to other online etiquette rules that should be followed. This information is also located
in class rules
The final item listed is Tech support. This item informs students whom they should contact
if they experience technical difficulties.
Remember even though all this information can be found on the syllabus it needs to be
broken out into sections in blackboard so students can find it easily. Also this information
should be located in at least two places.
If you use the examples we talked about, you will have covered multiple standards that
Qualities Matters have placed. The Rubrics are great for student to know
what to expect for each assignment. Rubrics cover standards 3.2 and 3.3
Class rules and Netiquette tell students expectations for student behavior in the online course
environment and cover standards 1.3 and 1.4 With Technology requirements listed, you will
meet Quality Matters standard 1.6 along with all the standards in standard 6 Course Technology
Methods of evaluation break down each assignment by points as well as gives a student the total
points possible in the course. Methods of evaluation satisfy standard 3.2
in addition to all these standards the syllabus and policies section also covers standards
5.3, 5.4 and all the standards in standard 7 Learner support
Thank you; we have just covered what is necessary for adding relevant information to your Syllabus
and Policies section.
If you would like more information on this subject, there are examples and resources
provided within the "Examples" and "Resources" folder within this course.
