Hello, it's Diane. This is page 3 of my art journal
where Alice meets the Cheshire Cat. In this video, I'm
going to show how I paint a very simple tree
and some very simple drawing techniques.
I'm basing my art journal on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
and John Tenniel's original illustrations.
You can find these illustrations for free and I've included a link
on my website how-to-be-a-bad-artist.com.
To begin with I painted the background using watercolours
and a really large watercolor brush and then I added the details in with a
finer brush later.
I painted Alice,
the Cheshire Cat and made the envelope separately.
and I added those at the end.
Here I'm painting a very simple tree.
After I've added in the background with a large
paintbrush, I'm using a fine paintbrush to paint in
an outline and the branches.
and then I'm using a sponge to create an effect that looks like leaves.
I know I'm using unusual colors here
but this is Alice in Wonderland so you use whatever colours you like!
You may be wondering why I'm painting a door in this scene...
Well on page 2 of my art journal I included a door that Alice
goes through to enter into another world.
And here I'm showing the back of the door.

This is a technique that I use to transfer
a drawing onto watercolour paper.
First of all I trace the outline
using a pencil onto tracing paper, then I turn the tracing paper
over and go over the same line again. Then place it on top of the watercolour
paper and
trace it again.
When you've done this you will see a fine outline on your watercolour paper
which you can follow. After this, I've decided
to outline the pencil lines
with a black pen and then I add in the watercolours.
I'm doing the same with the Cheshire Cat.
I'm tracing the outline and then transferring it to watercolour paper.
When I've finished painting all the different elements,
I cut them out with a craft knife on a cutting mat
or you could use a pair of scissors.
Alice visits the Mad Hatter's Tea Party next
so I decided to make her an invitation. I've made it look like a giant playing
card.
On one side I've glued check patterned paper paper and on the other
it's plain and I'm going to add some of my illustrations on there.
I've rounded the corner so it looks like a playing card
and then I'm going to stamp the lettering on top.
I'm using my alphabet stamp here
and a heart stamp as well.
Then next I'm going to use distress ink
to make it look like it's an old invitation.
And then this will go into the envelope, which I'm going to make next.
To make the envelope I took an old envelope
and undid the seems. I flattened it out and then used this as a template.
I put it on top
of the craft paper I'd chosen and drew around it.
Then I cut it out.
Using a bone folder and a ruler,
I refolded the envelope along the lines of the original envelope
and then I glued the seams together again and it was ready.
The final step was to arrange everything on the background
and then glue it all in place. I added some final details
with watercolours. In the story the Cheshire Cat's body
disappears so I've painted a faint outline
in watercolours.
And then here I'm gluing down the envelope. Now I'm putting the
invitation in the envelope and it's finished. Please remember to comment,
