Soy Intake Reduces Breast Cancer RecurrenceHi, I am Dr. James Meschino. A study presented
on April 2, 2011, at the 102nd American Association for Cancer Research’s Annual Meeting showed
that consumption of soy products by breast cancer survivors reduced their risk of cancer
recurrence and progression as well as mortality. The report featured data that combined four,
national cancer institute funded, studies: The Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study,
The Epidemiological Study, The Women's Healthy Eating and Living Study, and The Nurses’Health
Study. Together, this involved over 18,000 women between the ages of 20 and 83 who had
previously been diagnosed with invasive primary breast cancer.
9 years after the initial diagnosis and treatment, the study combined data which showed that
women who consumed a specific minimum amount of Soy isoflavones, had lower cancer recurrence
and lower cancer mortality, compared to breast cancer survivors who were not consuming any
or having very little soy in their diet. The details of this study are explained in my
