REBECCA SATO: Hi. I'm Rebecca Sato with ExpertVillage.com. We're going to talk about the home office.
If you're a freelance writer, chances are that there will be times when you'll be working
from home, if not, all the time. I know I do 90 percent of my work at home in my home
office. So let's talk about your home office. Not everyone is going to have the opportunity
to have their own room in the house that's just for them. I mean, we've got husbands,
wives, kids, dogs, relatives and sometimes, there's just not the space to have your own
office. If you do have a space, then I would make it a priority. You know what? A big mistake
that a lot of new freelance writers make and sometimes even experienced freelance writers
make is they don't think enough about their environment and how that affects their writing.
Now, even if your home office is just a little nook in the kitchen, make that yours. Claim
it. Let your husband, your wife, your kids, your dog, let everybody know that when you're
in there working, it's a real job. And they may as well pretend that your office is a
hundred miles away, because you're at work and you can't have constant distractions.
For me, I have tried to create a really beautiful office where I have art work that inspires
me and makes me feel good. I have plants because to me plants are very rejuvenating and very
Zen, I guess you could say. I've got good lighting. I make sure I have beautiful lighting
and I'm a very organic person. I'd like very down to earth, very grounded. I like to have
a lot of like natural materials, things like that, that just make me feel good. I don't
think that you can be a good writer if you're not in a good state of mind. And I don't think
you can be in a good state of mind if you are in an environment of chaos. And so try
and keep that in mind and make your home office a place that is conducive to creativity and
to productivity.
