Hi, it's Craig Fugate, the Administrator of FEMA. I just recently returned from
Joplin, Missouri and I think it's really important that you understand what folks
down there have gone through. This was an F5 tornado on the Fujita scale which
is the strongest tornado that we record. The devastation really is hard to
describe unless you're there and a lot of people are wondering how they can
help the folks in Joplin recover and they want to send stuff. I really
recommend not to send things right now. What they really need right now is cash
going to relief organizations that are going to be there both for the immediate
and long term. There are several sites you can go to. We'll have those links on
this blog for you to take a look at. But really the best way to help people is to
keep them in your thoughts and prayers and be generous to those relief
organizations such as the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and others
that are actually performing heroic work supporting the survivors of the
devastating tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri.
