Hi! I'm here with Jamaican Queens from Detroit, Michigan. Can you all go around and say your
name and your band duties?
I'm Adam, I play bass.
My name is Ryan and I play drums and the SPDS pad
My name is also Ryan and I play guitar, and bass and sampler, and I sing.
So you guys are still a pretty young band, it's been less than a year since you did your
first live show, but you've been doing a lot of touring and here we are in your home basically.
What has life on the road, how has that effected your band?
None of us have homes anymore, we've sublet our houses so we really do live in this van.
I feel completely disconnected to reality, and to my friends at home, and to my family...
What are you getting dark already?
No! I don't mean to get dark but this is honest! Like, I live through Instagram.
Do you find more satisfaction writing and recording music or performing it?
Probably a bigger instant rush is playing live - but I think I gain more satisfaction
from writing and recording. Like when you're done and you have this thing that you're really
proud of, there's nothing like it. Maybe childbirth but I don't think I'll ever do a childbirth
with anyone.
Like birth a child or...?
I don't think anything of mine is ever going to come out of someone else.
No seed of yours will blossom.
I pictured you actually as a doctor like birthing...
No, I can't even go to a doctor's office.
It seems like a lot of really rad stuff is happening right now in Detroit. Can you tell
me a little bit about your city and how Detroit influences the music that you make?
Yeah, yeah. It's a really interesting city with a very small, tight-knit group of people
in the music and art scene. So everyone kind of knows each other and is fairly supportive,
which is interesting. I feel like in other cities it's kind of competitive.
What's the most surreal experience on tour so far?
Probably meeting that dude. Hanging out with that dude that worked for Rhianna and Chris
Brown.
Oh yeah, that guy - that was crazy. He took us to his mansion during SXSW and um...
Just feeding us blunts and eggs...
It's true. Yeah. He was like, he had a guy that rolled blunts all night. And in the morning...
Just like one babe cleaning up stuff...
He had one house cleaner that was just there dressed in her underwear... yeah, yeah and
she was just cleaning.
How did I not hear about this?!
She was dressed in nothing at all, he had a naked house cleaner!
She was very beautiful.
She was a beautiful woman.
She was really beautiful... but the rest of them were gone! We stayed up until 6am and
we woke up at 10am and they were gone! It was like a weird dream.
And she left before us!
She didn't leave before us but as we were leaving she she goes "You want a blunt for
the road?" And I was like "Yeah!"
What bands have you met on the road that you would recommend for others to check out?
I've got this one down. Bubbly Mommy Gun from Athens, Georgia, Coyote Cleanup, Pat Jordache
from Montreal, Manny Gonzalez, There's TOPS from Montreal, Sean Nicholas Savage, Child
Bite... let me see, there's so many that we like a lot...
Danny Brown, and of course Self Says, Passalacqua...
Ben Christianson who is Dakota Bones makes awesome house music...
Javelin.
Oh yeah, we're on tour with Javelin right now - from New York and LA I think... Yeah.
That's a good list!
Alright, I have a pretty important question. Don't think about this logically, just think
about what's cutest to you when I say Puppy Baby or Baby Puppy. A Puppy Baby being a puppy
head and a baby body, and a Baby Puppy being a baby head with a puppy body. What is cuter?
Ah man, the baby head on the puppy body is terrifying. Definitely the other one.
They're both really terrifying.
I like the baby head on the puppy body. That sounds good.
I want a giraffe head on a baby, OR... on a puppy body.
Oh cute!
Really long, huge neck on this tiny little dog.
A little pug maybe? ...in a diaper
Well no because the best part of a pug is its disgusting [mimics a pug]
That's true you need that! What about just the giraffe neck - pug face?
OH! Pug face on a giraffe!
That's perfect.
Alright, seems like we got it figured out. Can you tell us where we can find Jamaican
Queens music?
JamaicanQueens.com
Who runs that website? Who does that?
Oh, beautiful! Definitely check out that beautifully done website. Well, thank you guys so much.
And definitely check out jamaicanqueens.com, thanks.
