Hi, my name is Lesleyanne Ezelle,
I am the Disability Integration Specialist for FEMA Region 3.
I wanted to show you some of the equipment that we have
in our disaster recovery centers that provides equal access
communication for people. So first of all, I want to look at
some of the equipment that we have
here that magnifies materials.
So we have a lighted magnifier here,
a tabletop magnifier, we have a
handheld magnifier that also magnifies information but it also
helps in terms of being handheld.
We have another piece of equipment which is called
an assisted listening device.
We utilize this for people who are
hard of hearing and who may have difficulty hearing information in
the DRC. We have also created
some videos for people that are in American Sign Language,
open captioned, and narrated English
that gives information about FEMA services and the support
that we provide in disaster recovery centers, along with information on
mold cleanup.
We have another piece of equipment
that amplifies sound, it's an amplified phone.
That phone can do a variety of different things,
it has large buttons, and those buttons are in Braille
for people with low vision or who are blind. It changes the tone
of the sound so for people who are having difficulty with tone,
it helps with the adjusting of that
as well as the increasing of the volume.
It has the capacity to speak to a person, so it gives the person
the capacity to get that information that they need
in an accessible format.
The reason that this is important is that it enables people to get
the information that they need the same as anybody else.
So if we're having difficulties with a person being able to
hear something, they're not getting the information that they need.
By providing this equipment, by providing this information
in an accessible format, the person is able to get the information
the same as anybody else.
