This is a letter arts review magazine and if you are really interested in the lettering
arts, this is a wonderful magazine to get. It's all full of delicious images and all
kinds of things. Information about lettering in general. Now on the cover we have a facsimile
of a very old manuscript and if you look very carefully what you are going to see is this
is a gothic hand and it looks to me to be about more or less northern gothic. And what
I want to point to you is just the whole idea of the use of gothic and the composition and
how you might think about doing a page of gothic. I would guess that this page took,
I don't know maybe weeks, months, I don't know. I have absolutely no idea. What I do
know is that there is a lot of planning that goes into coming up with a page like this.
And it's not really something that modern calligraphers do very often. But more likely
you'll get hired, or I get hired anyway to do quotations, biblical quotations for example,
very appropriate to use the gothic and most people say they like that. So here is an example,
this is actually just a colored copy of the piece that was quite a bit larger. So I didn't
actually letter, I think that I did not letter with a pen. I think I was lettering with a
brush because the piece was considerably larger but this is an example of how I would design
a biblical quote. You might want to take a peak down here at the way I did amen, that
was kind of fun I thought.
