This is my subtitle commentary track for Big Boss: The Highway Star.
The way this video came about is actually a sorta strange story. A friend and I were sitting in traffic. There was nothing good on the radio...
So we started talking about things people do in cars. Everything from sex to police chases came up.
I was able to find a good station on the radio before getting out of the big jam. Aerosmith, then Purple...
Same songs heard here were on the radio that day in the traffic. As soon as I dropped my friend off later that night...
I went to work on probably one of the most difficult projects I've ever done yet. This video.
Right away, I was faced with serious technical issues. Things like unsynched audio right from export, *** poor lighting, heck *** poor video quality in general...
The footage was a big concern in general, really. The in game editor has a tendency to create what looks like a frame long jump cut between shots sometimes.
With that in game video editor, you'd think that making a video like this would be very, very easy, but there are issues that come with it like this frame problem.
I ended up with a metric ton of footage, only half was good, and I was losing a time with each cut of one of those wasted frames.
By the end, I had cut out about two minutes worth of footage... for a ten minute video, thats a considerably large amount of frames to cut.
The length of the songs was also a problem. This was the case for the opening sequence in particular. I wasn't crazy about using Round And Round again when it was in the trailer already.
But it worked better than any of the songs I could think of, and I could cut it to perfect time. So it ended up being the unofficial theme song of this Big Boss video
And so, here begins the chase. As does the unpredictability of the AI and the general events that occur in the world of GTA IV.
It was a real pain in the *** to get things to work in a way that seemed grand and like an actual good chase when the police tend to like to box in suspects in this game...
Not to mention the fact that the cars tend to handle like boats. Realistic my butt! Many of the suposed performance cars in this game handle like dog *** on ice...
Obviously this video took full use of the Native Trainer mod, which allows players to modify everything from their clothing to the color and handling of their car.
This explains (along with my own personal driving ability in game) how this car handles so well. It was tough to get this thing together.
My biggest issue with this video is the fact that it doesn't seem like it's a huge chase in the first half, though, in a way, I didn't want it to, I can't possibly compete with Hard Charger: Wide Open...
That also sort of has to do with what I was thinking about doing in a sequel to this. I think of this as the stage where the training wheels are coming off the bike after my first IV video (Breaking The What) had sucess.
Anyways, the sequel is going to be more of the action packed, fast driving, guns blazing thrill ride that I want to make, and now have the skills to create as well.
This was fun to make, and I hope it's fun to watch, don't get me wrong, but I want something bigger and better for the follow up to this. Like I said, the training wheels are off, now I can do a lot more than I could before.
This here in the tunnel is actually the very first footage I did for this. It's actually kind of obvious, because it was before I took any kind of film class or had anyidea what a good looking shot looked like.
... this is clearly after film class...
This isn't.
There are some very good looking shots all over this video, but I think my very favorite is the one coming up in a second.
This is the one.
I dunno, I just really, really like that shot. It's so cool and feels genuine. I actually hit that wall there, and I didn't have to cut it out.
A little nod to Ferris Bueller right here.
I wanted everything after this song to feel more personal. Old vs new, like Vader vs Obi Wan. Obviously the old one wouldn't win, but it does have more heart.
