The UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser (GCSA), Sir John Beddington, visited
the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), in Campinas, on May 12th.
The United Kingdom GCSA came to Brazil to know the scientific cooperation projects
in strategic areas between the two countries signed in the last years.
Beddington visited the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS).
There he saw the new Brazilian Synchrotron third generation project,
which will be open to users in 2015.
The delegation also visited the Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory (CTBE),
where he knew its five research programs and the partnerships setteled with UK institutions.
The visit was finished with the Laboratories and
Pilot Plant for Processes Development presentation.
Beddington looked impressed with the CTBE’s ability
to develop experiments on cellulosic ethanol at different scales.
Beyond integrating basic and applied science,
this fact facilitates the transfer of new technologies for the industrial sector.
The minister also said that the scientific collaboration between UK and Brazil
is essential to deal with important global challenges of the coming decades,
as the global warming.
