How to Grow a Garden in Your Apartment. If you live in an apartment, don't let the limited
space stop you from growing a garden. You will need Location Plant varieties Large containers
Potting soil Seeds and indoor plant lights (optional). Step 1. Select a location for
your garden.A balcony or a patio that gets plenty of sun is an ideal spot. You may also
be able to use your porch. Many plants can be grown indoors under special plant lights.
Step 2. Decide what you want to plant. Choose varieties that can be planted close together.
Check the back of seed packets for information about plant spacings. Nonedible plants that
thrive indoors include peace lillies, pothos, and lucky bamboo. Edible plants that can survive
indoors include herbs, as well as carrots, radishes, lettuce, and peppers. Step 3. Collect
plant containers. You can either purchase some or use recycled containers that will
hold soil and that you can poke holes in for drainage. If you recycle materials, be sure
to wash and disinfect them before planting. Step 4. Choose large containers unless you
are growing seedlings or very small single plants to optimize root development. Position
the containers to optimize growing conditions for your plants. You can move the containers
later if you need to make adjustments. Step 5. Add potting soil to the containers, plant
your seeds, and add water. Then wait for your garden to grow. Did you know As of 2005, New
York City has about 50,000 apartments covered by rent control.
