Hi, this is Karen McKee, the scientist videographer. And today, I’m going to be demonstrating
a shutter remote controller that can be paired with your iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer. With
this remote controller, you can start and stop your video recording or shoot a still
image.

Sometimes we need to shoot several takes of an on-camera speech or a demonstration. Having
to manually start and stop the camera for each take is inconvenient and adds to the
length of the clips, which then requires a lot of trimming later. If you use an iPhone’s
camera to shoot video or still images, a remote controller for the shutter can come in handy,
especially if you work alone.
This is the Shutterremote. It is small and lightweight and will fit into your pocket.
The controls are simple enough and pairing with your iOS device is easy. The remote runs
on two coin cell batteries.
Here is how to set up the remote and pair it with your iPhone. First, turn the power
on with the switch located on the left edge of the remote; a blue light indicates the
power is on. Next, press the pairing button located on the right edge of the remote. The
LED light will then flash blue and red, indicating it is in pairing mode.
Next, access the Bluetooth settings on your phone. Go to settings, then General, then
Bluetooth. Turn on Bluetooth to activate the function. The setup automatically starts.
Shutter Remote will appear in the devices list. When the pairing reads connected, you
are ready to begin. Then open your camera app.
To start the video recording on your phone’s camera, all you need do is push the plus button
on the remote. The phone’s camera will begin recording and you can see the recording light
is on. To stop the recording, just press the button again. You can also take a still photo
the same way.
With the Shutter Remote, you can easily stop recording, consult your notes between takes,
and continue shooting without having to move from your position in front of the camera.
The range of this particular remote is about 35 feet, which will cover most shooting situations.
This is great if you are shooting alone from an unusual position or wish to start a video
recording of an action scene from a distance away from your phone’s camera.
So using a shutter remote controller paired with your iPhone is a great asset for the
solo videographer and should make your filming a whole lot more efficient. This is Karen
McKee, the scientist videographer. Thanks for watching.
