This unit we're gonna be talking about laundry. Before we begin though, I want you pause the
video and answer the two questions that I have written down on your notesheet: why do
you think we do laundry? and what does the laundry process consist of? Once you've done
that, I want you to come up with two or three questions of your own that you still might
have. Tomorrow in class, before we do our own laundry, we will answer these questions
together. When we do laundry there is a list of things that we need: a laundry hamper that
has all of our dirty clothes in it, some detergent, stain remover, bounce sheets for the dryer,
and a washer where we will wash our clothes, and a dryer that will dry our clothes when
we are done. The first thing that we're going to do when we do laundry is we're going to
sort our clothes based the color of them. Now, as you see here, I have a lot of clothes
that are dark in color. Which means we are going to do a load of darks. If I had a lot
of white clothes, like this shirt, here or undershirts, or stuff like that we would be
doing whites. You don't want to mix your darks and whites together otherwise the colors can
blend in on the whites. Now, while I have a lot of clothes here, I made sure not to
have too many. If I had too many clothes when I put them in the dryer, they're not all going
to get dry, and they're going to come out wet like they just came out of the washer.
Now that we have enough clothes, we have them sorted in the color, we can go to the laundry
room where we have the washer and dryer and start washing our clothes. Now when we go
to the laundry room, we have to make sure we have laundry detergent and stain remover
incase we have stains in our clothes. Alright, so now that we're in the laundry room, we're
putting our clothes in the washer, you can see here that I spilled my lunch on one of
my shirts this past weekend. So what I'm gonna do is take this stain remover and I'm gonna
spray the stain. And once I have the stain covered, I'm just gonna plop it into the washer
and finish filling it up with the dirty clothes. Now, it's important when you have jean, pants,
or shorts that you check your pockets. Sometimes you'll leave your wallet in there or your
phone, which means you're out of luck and you're gonna have to get a new phone. Now
once we have all of clothes in the washer, we can ahead...and we have our laundry detergent.
Now, in here, you're gonna see a little lines around the bottom. Because I just have a medium
load of clothes, I'm gonna fill up the laundry detergent up to about the first line. And
we're gonna put it right into the container where the detergent's gonna go. Now, some
washers are gonna have different compartments so just look on your washer to where they
go. Once we have that done we're gonna close the lid, and we're gonna select the water
level, because it's a bigger load we're gonna select "large" and because dark clothes we're
gonna select "warm". I've selected warm and now because I live in an apartment I have
use coins. I'm gonna point my coins in and it's gonna start. Now that we've started the
wash, we have to wait for the washer to be done so we can put them into the dryer. So
that's gonna take anywhere from about 30 minutes to about 45 minutes depending on the size
of the load and the washer. So that we've done that I'm gonna go back and work on so
homework and I'll come back real shortly. Now that our laundry is done, I'm gonna move
them from the washer to the dryer. You'll notice that some of them stick together so
what you're gonna wanna do is at the end you're gonna wanna make sure you haven't left anything
in the washer. Now that that's all done, we're gonna check the lint and remove this before
you start the load so it doesn't heat up and cause a fire. For a lot of the dryers its
gonna on the bottom right here, but for mine it's right here. All we'll do now is add a
bounce sheet that will remove some static, place that in there, and close the door. And
again, because I live in an apartment, I'll make sure I put my change in, make sure my
load's not on anything that it shouldn't be. Looks like everything's ready, and push start.
And then we'll come back in about a half hour or so again and then we can go onto folding.
Now that we're done with the dryer, look at our clothes to make sure they're dry. If you
remember, this was my sweatshirt that had some stains on it, and we'll look and that's
all gone. You can see the importance of what a stain remover can do. Now that everything
is out of the dryer, we're gonna go back and begin folding. Now onto the process that everyone
likes to do, folding the laundry. What I like to do when I fold my laundry is have piles.
I'll have a pile for my sweatshirts, for my shorts, for my t-shirts, and for my jeans.
Once I'm done with that I'll go to my room and I'll hang up my sweatshirts, jeans, and
polos, and I'll have a cupboard for my socks and my t-shirts. What I want you to do now
is write down two or three questions that you still might have and then we'll discuss
them tomorrow. What we're gonna do tomorrow is answer your questions that you had at the
beginning of the lesson, you answered, and what you're gonna write down now. Then we're
gonna go over how to do laundry together. See you guys tomorrow.
