So how do the meal plans work in your residence halls?
I know for University housing you get a mix between meals and credits.
Meals is kind of what you think of, it’s an all you can eat meal, you swipe in
and it takes one counter off of your meals for that week and you eat an all you can eat buffet meal at a University dining hall.
And then the credits are kind of like one credit equals one dollar and you can use them to swipe into meals also,
each meal has kind of a set price that you can use credits to get in
or you can use them at a bunch of A La Carte locations on campus.
So I know for me 57 North is really close to where I live and I can go there and if I don’t have enough time for a meal maybe,
I can grab a hamburger and a drink or a bag of chips or something like that, they’ll even have a wrap station there.
And they’ll also sell shampoo and toothbrushes in case you forgot anything at home so that’s kind of the base logistics of it.
But then also for University housing one of the cool things is regardless of where you live on campus,
you can eat at any other University housing dining hall.
The meal plans kind of vary with each private certified housing residential halls.
In Illini Tower we had things known as the Bronze, Silver, and Gold meal plans.
The Bronze being about one meal a day, Silver being about two meals a day, and the Gold being three meals a day.
I had the Silver meal plan and I had two meals and that was actually more than enough.
You can only eat at the dining hall that you live, so since I lived at Illini Tower,
I could only eat a Illini Tower’s dining hall so if you lived at lets say Bromley,
which is another private certified residential hall, you can only eat at Bromley’s dining hall,
whereas University housing you can eat at any of the dining halls around campus.
Was the food good at either of your residence halls?
Definitely, Ikeberry Commons has a huge variety of food too, which is the dining hall that I’m at.
There’s all sorts of different little stations where you can get a food from a different part of the world
or a different type of food so that was really cool to have that variety.
I also really liked the specialty dining nights that would be housed in different dining halls,
so one of my favorites was Cocina, which is in Illinois Street Residence,
and it was kind of Mexican food I guess we would call it. But it is delicious,
so I would always go there and they’d have amazing Mexican food and they’d be playing awesome Latino music also.
So that was a super fun atmosphere even to eat in so there is definitely good food on campus.
I agree with Jill 100% The dining hall offers so much variety, it’s ridiculous.
I got here and walked into the dining hall for breakfast and it was just a buffet there,
and I was like “I mean can I just eat how much I want” and they were like “Yea!!!” and I was like “Oh my God!”
So they had panini bars, they had fruit bars, and pizza bars
and all these wonderful things which isn’t wonderful all the time because the freshmen 15 is indeed real.
I also enjoyed the Ikenberry Commons a lot too, I had my friend swipe me in there,
and when you walk in there it’s just like a giant food utopia, literally.
You don’t know what to eat, that’s the problem. It’s not that there is nothing to eat,
it’s there is too much to eat and you will seldom find yourself eating outside of the dining halls.
You may go outside the dining halls every once in a while,
maybe go on Green Street and go to a restaurant but it doesn’t happen often.
You’ll always be eating within the dining halls because the food is very good.
