Well being in theater is about not just
learning the art form but interacting and
collaboration all of the time and there’s no
better way to teach that than service learning.
And I also found that the more my students
were involved with it, the more excited
they got about everything they were learning,
about their whole experience here at Western.
So I thought, ‘Well, let’s just keep that going.’
And I really wanted the classes to have
some sort of impact, not just for the students,
but on the community.
I’m very pro-community outreach, I think that
the art form that we do is vital and
we’re creating, also, audiences for the future.
And so, in doing that, we’re creating people
who can perform this art form and people
who appreciate it and it’s a win-win situation
for everybody in the community.
So I just rolled it in to all the classes
because every time I would get the evaluations back
they were so incredibly positive and
overwhelming in their need and want for more.
‘Can we do this in more classes?’
‘How can we roll this in?’
The students were asking that.
So I just answered the student need.
And the community, of course, is clamoring
for support from this institution that we
have here and all of this knowledge
and energy that we have to share.
So I’m just capitalizing on something
that’s there and ready to happen.
