The family of a man who died following delays in dealing with a tear to his bowel could
seek medical negligence compensation following the criminal proceedings against the surgeon
involved.
Active family man James Hughes had undergone a successful knee operation at Clementine
Churchill Hospital in London when he complained of abdominal pain. Consultant David Sellu
is alleged to have suspected this was caused by a potentially fatal rupture, but didn't
act straight away.
Instead, James had to wait 40 hours to be scanned and prepped for surgery, while Mr
Sellu continued with his own clinic. The patient died of blood poisoning and a heart attack
after the operation, with the prosecutor at the Old Bailey indicating that more prompt
care would have improved the chances of survival.
Mr Sellu denies a charge of manslaughter on the grounds of gross medical negligence and
the case is continuing.
