Welcome to this brief tutorial on Readability, a free reading service that works within your web browser.
The web site to learn more and to download what you'll need
is www.readability.com. An example of why you'd want to use Readability
is presented at the homepage of The New York Times. This is a classic example
of a web page with too much going on. It's cluttered with a variety of distractions
such as hyperlinks, buttons, images, advertisements, tabs,
text fields, multiple columns...but if you can navigate
your way to a single article from here, you can get one step
closer to distraction-free reading. So, I'm going to select this article
on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, which is today.
Once I'm at the article, I'm still faced with numerous
distractions. But here's where I can apply Readability by clicking
on its button in my browser. Watch what happens.
Let me zoom in on this so you can see it more closely.
When you hold your cursor over the button you'll get a tooltip that says "Read Now."
Click on it. And the clutter is removed so that I can take a deep breath
and focus on the content that I'm here to read.
