At one point in their lives, one in five Canadians
will experience mental illness and even more will
experience mental health concerns
of one kind or another.
As with all Canadians, a significant number
of York University community members
are also at risk of experiencing feelings of depression,
loneliness, distressing anxiety or anger, or some form
of mental illness in their lives.
York University is committed to promoting
a mentally healthy campus for all students, faculty
and staff, while fostering student
academic success and a better workplace.
To that end, our new Mental Health and Wellness strategy
is built on three foundational pillars:
First, Health and Wellness Promotion
to increase awareness of healthy life strategies
and promote participation in wellness programs that
may contribute to a person's wellbeing.
Secondly, the Facilitation of Care and Support
to increase awareness and accessibility
to resources available both on- and off-campus for York
community members who require support or assistance.
Thirdly, Collaboration and Discussion
to encourage and facilitate dialogue around mental health
and wellbeing among our students, faculty and staff,
and within the broader community.
It is only by speaking up openly and in a safe environment
that we can begin to address the mental health challenges facing
our communities today.
Knowing that information and resources are available,
both on-campus and off-campus, is
important for staying well if you feel overwhelmed,
or for support if you are in crisis.
I encourage all members of the York community
to become familiar with the information and resources
available on our Mental Health and Wellbeing website.
Together, we can create a healthy, supportive campus
where everyone can fulfill their greatest potential.
