You know that in Australia, the direct cost of sleep disorder was costed at the value
of $850 million. Bekaert has been always involved with sleeping because we supply the bedding
industry with fabrics. The fabrics going around the mattresses are supplied by Bekaert. Bekaert
is worldwide a key supplier. We try, basically, to assist people to sleep better, safer and
longer.
So in this particular project, from RMIT's point of view, we'll be helping and assisting
Bekaert to improve their existing product, as well as to add some value by giving them
sort of -- doing some different coatings, finishes, also looking from moisture management,
comfort and thermo-regulations: those sort of properties of a fabric we'll be working
on with Bekaert.
It's a very well known fact for the industry that RMIT is getting very active within the
industry. Definitely we have seen the change from basic knitting, basic weaving to very
advanced product testing, product analysing.
We will test their products at Brunswick. We have testing facilities such as the skin
model which simulates the sweating effect and testing the thermo-conductivity and the
vapour conductivity. We have other instruments as well - they are the latest technology we
have, and we are doing research and we also can help with industry.
They can take our knowledge even a step further. Because they have quite a few -- and it's
a research body -- and it's all what those people normally have to do as researching
-- because we are here to basically run businesses, you know, and we hope now that we can take
that a couple of steps further.
