Hi Groovers, Chris here from www.MTBtips.com with my Top 4 Tips for climbing
stairs
the skills you learn here in the concrete jungle will certainly boost your
rock and root climbing ability
on the trials, too. Click the link on screen or in the description for the
complete stair climbing tips
including the 'How to Ride Down Stairs' video. Start on just a few steps,
advancing to longer flights as your skills and confidence improve.
Step 1. On approach look ahead to the start of the stairs, then lead your bike up
the stairs with your eyes.
Look a few stairs ahead of where your wheel is.
Step 2. Set your speed and gear on approach. For beginners, approach at about
walking pace.
Choose a gear that will help you keep momentum and overcome the last steps
with relative ease.
Experience will teach you the best speed and gear to choose.
The real challenge begins when you've got a bunch of steep stairs where
momentum is a critical, yet delicate balance.
The more momentum on approach, the less or later you'll struggle for traction. But,
too much momentum, and you risk slamming your bike into the stairs and stalling.
Pure horsepower might get you up some smoother flights like this one,
but steeper and sharper stairs require much more finesse and technique.
Step 3. Riding off the saddle,
rock your weight slightly rearwards, as you lift or pedal lift
the front wheel to transition smoothly to the first or second step.
Step 4. Absorb the shock of the stairs with your arms and legs,
as you shift forward to keep above the pedals with some weight on the front
wheel.
Engage the chain and pedal to the top, Saddle Stopping
if you need rear wheel traction. On these spread stairs, lifting the front
and Saddle Stopping the rear in a rhythm, is key for maintaining momentum and traction.
1. Lead with your eyes. 2. Set your speed and gear
3. Transition the front wheel. 4. Absorb and Position.
