[boy] This chili is going for the food pantry
and I think it's going to help the world.
[girl] you give a donation to the church
and you help the Ivory Coast of Africa.
[Kayla Porter] We're making little kits for UMCOR.
It's for people who need, like people in Haiti cause of the earthquake.
[narrator] An energetic and impassioned crew from the
United Methodist Church of the Rockaways in New Jersey
spent a weekend making a difference.
[woman] Beautiful.
[Tina Smith] They need help sorting.
Let me show you what we need.
[narrator] It was the sort of event organized to benefit others,
bit by bit, helping hand by helping hand.
For church outreach coordinator, Tina Smith,
it was a project without limits.
[Tina Smith] We're showing children how to get involved and give back.
You can change the world one person at a time.
It doesn't matter how old you are.
[Tina] Women's medium, right there, see the M?
There, perfect.
[narrator] The Rockaways congregation joined thousands
from around the globe in a weekend dubbed "Change the World."
The Rev. Jean McMullan believes events like this
are what make the church relevant.
[Jean McMullan] It's not only transformational for the people
who are on the receiving end but I think it's also
transformational for all the folks dropping off clothes and
pet supplies and are going to eat chili later and the
Girl Scouts that are doing brownies.
[narrator] From the chili cook-off and the clothing drive,
to the brownie bake-off and disaster kits preparation,
ten different programs benefitted from Rockaways' heartfelt effort.
[Sheila McLaughlin] Did you put in your spool of thread
and also the buttons the scissors?
[narrator] For Rev. McMullan, the seeds of change planted over
the weekend should continue to provide a bountiful harvest
for years to come.
[McMullan] It's not about fundraising.
It's about outreach. It's about changing lives.
