The main lesson from the winter run is that the Endangered Species Act works.
It actually worked in this case.
Very probably to prevent the
winter run salmon from going extinct, they were on the brink of
extinction when we
brought our lawsuit to force the federal government to list the winter run
as an endangered species.
They were down to one hundred and ninety-one individual adults returning to spawn,
down from hundreds of thousands historically.
The listing of the winter run, enabled
the winter run to pull back from the brink of extinction and they are now
on their way to recover.
So the Endangered Species Act can work to
save endangered species from going extinct
and moreover it does not need to result
in economic hardship to other
segments of the economy.
