The Honors College at Grand Valley State University became
the Frederik Meijer Honors College in the fall of 2008.
Fred Meijer, chairman emeritus
of his family's super store chain, did not go to college
and wants to encourage first-generation college
students to pursue a liberal education at Grand Valley.
I think the hope of America is education, education, education.
The gift to Grand Valley
by the Meijer Foundation is supporting scholarships,
dedicated counseling, undergraduate research,
a lecture series, and a faculty member devoted
to entrepreneurship.
The Meijer Honors College enrolls
about 900 students...about half of whom live
in the Niemeyer Learning and Living Center
on the Allendale Campus.
The state-of-the-art facility gives honors students apartment
style living right next to classrooms,
labs and faculty offices.
The college and its building are all designed to bolster learning
through a tight, supportive community.
For Around Grand Valley, I'm Mary Eilleen Lyon.
