Welcome to the APSCo news summary produced by HR & Recruiter TV and sponsored
by the Technology In Recruitment Alliance.
We start this bulletin with the latest APSCo trends which shows the UK Government's continued
investment in infrastructure has boosted temporary employment levels across the engineering sector
despite the otherwise bleak jobs market.
APSCo's research reveals that whilst both permanent placements and vacancies within
the sector continue to fall year on year, the temporary section of the market is faring
much better. Temporary placements, for example, have risen by 2% since March 2012 and 1% since
February 2013, however there appears to be a regional divide. Looking specifically at
online recruitment statistics provided for APSCo by Innovantage contract placements
in Scotland have rocketed by 33% since March 2012. In contrast, the South East has seen
a 15% fall in assignments which is in line with the Government's National Infrastructure
Plan schedule.
Whilst the engineering sector continues to improve, the overall picture for the professional
jobs market remains mixed with permanent jobs increasingly being replaced with contract
roles. Whilst temporary placements have risen by 5% year on year, permanent placements have
fallen by almost 7% which is indicative of a continued lack of employer confidence.
Last month saw the launch of APSCo Asia with our inaugural meeting in Singapore. The event
was attended by 75 recruitment leaders from the region and included presentations from
LinkedIn and Squire Sanders. The event was sponsored by RBS and the response in the region
was really positive and it's becoming clear that APSCo will help to make a real difference.
A recent totaljobs.com survey of UK graduates has revealed that 34% of university leavers
have claimed jobseekers allowance since graduating, and 21% have been looking for work for as
long as 12 months. Almost a fifth of graduates have applied for more than 100 jobs and as
many as a quarter have not been invited to a single interview yet.
Graduate Director Mike Fetters commented University is not the only route to employment today
and more needs to be done to highlight other avenues such as apprenticeships and vocational
qualifications, with universities needing stronger links with industry to ensure graduates
get a job that reflects their skills set.
On a lighter note, the Recruitment Challenge Cup Football Festival, in aid of ChildLine
is just weeks away. The event is free to attend so please do come along and bring your colleagues,
friends and family. There will be entertainment for all ages, including licenced bars and
food stalls, live bands, bouncy castles, face painting and more. There will even be big
screens to watch the last games of the Premiership Season.
The event will be held at the iconic Hackney Marshes which has been developed as part of
the London 2012 Olympic Games on Sunday 19th May.
Other than the football tournament, the event will include bungee jumping. So - are you
brave enough to take the dive?
It's easy to take part in this event. All you have to do is visit the APSCo website
or get in contact with one of the team for more information.
Well that's all from me this month.
