Our organization, Facundo Element, engages in activism.
Activism generally involves action taken to change something or
to ensure that current ideas continue.
There are times when laws and policies in place
are unfair to groups and/or individuals and need to be changed.
Activism is practiced in various ways, such as: writing letters to politicians,
running for office, sit-ins, hunger strikes, or boycotts,
(refusing to financially support businesses), and more.
Activism is a great tool for giving leverage to groups that are
in a position of powerlessness or disadvantage. Usually groups
holding power are comfortable and are not willing to change.
As such, things often become tense when groups demand their fair share.
As many civil rights leaders in history have said:
You cannot have change without tension present.
So how can activists at Facundo Element help your community?
We do workshops with the goal of teaching skills, and we can also
meet with local leaders to discuss ways we can work
behind the scenes while your community takes the lead.
Alternately, there are times when folks don't want to rock the boat,
don't want to get into trouble. We are willing to
come in and take the lead-- and in doing so, take the heat.
Where film allows us to spread ideas,
activism ensures those ideas are enforced.
