hey I'm in downtown Calgary today at the Westin Hotel
attending the women have influence luncheon series
now as you can tell by the activity behind me it's gonna be a big event
there's over 200 women from downtown Calgary scheduled to attend
no that's a big event and it can be pretty intimidating
even for and networking dard like myself so I want to share with you today
my one all-time favorite networking tap you know how some people have approach
networking with the real hunter and conquer attitude
the coming to an event like this looking for who's there will be no and how can
it benefit me
whether it's looking for the next best opportunity for their career
all were a fresh facts have qualified prospects for their business
that approach can seem or can look
pushy and aggressive and when we tried it emulate that
you know it feels phony let me share with you now
my different approach it's an approach I called the give-and-take
networking strategy and happily its easier
and it's much more effective okay it starts with
approaching networking opportunity like this with givers mindset
it said looking what you can take from me about or from the participants
come into these conversations with what with opportunity
to give to help someone else out and it doesn't have to be much
it could be a referral to that great new salon you tried out or it could be a
business article that you know will help the person
you're seated next to you look for wheaties even small ways that you can
give information ideas and resources
to help the people that you meet now this is immediately gonna put you in a
great light
even with strangers that you just met and
it makes striking up a conversation with a stranger much easier
because you know what you're just there to help now the other part of the
strategy
is the take or to ask nicely
for their business card before you disengaged with someone you've just met
an event like this
be sure to ask for their business card it not only shows that you're interested
in who they are and what they do but it also
gives you the critical information you need to go home
had them to your LinkedIn network and follow up
with whatever information you talked about your conversation
you know when you apply this give-and-take strategy consistently
in your career you can build your brand someone who is a powerful resource
for others not only that it's much more effective
and people are gonna wanna reciprocate when you give freely
have your information ideas and resources so
I'm gonna start getting ready to do some networking for myself but I'll leave you
with this step
the best career opportunities come to those
with the generous heart.
