Well, I’m cruisin down the road about sixty-five Thinkin’ bout the companies that made my
ride Wonderin’ what I need to do to break it
down To understand the forces that shape Motown.
So I called up my homies in five-nineteen To see if they could tell it to me nice and
clean They told me “Yo, Porter is the dude,”
And he’s recommended by Professor Mahsud.
I sat down with my fancy textbook And at page sixty-nine I commenced to look
My heart was racin just like a horse’s When I discovered Michael Porter’s Five
Forces!
Porter’s Five Forces workin’ hard every day
To explain competition in a reasonable way Cars are complex and companies are too
And so are consumers like me and you
Industry competitors – not a nice bunch They’re always in a hurry to eat your lunch;
Suppliers, substitutes, and buyers, too Threat of new entrants always sneakin up on
you
Fierce competition, not always on price Tryin ‘to keep those profit margins nice
Most market share in the hands of a few That’s an oligopoly I’m sayin to you
Porter’s Five Forces workin’ hard every day
To explain competition in a reasonable way Cars are complex and companies are too
And so are consumers like me and you
Suppliers they hold very little power They’re hopin’ that their agreements don’t
sour Auto makers pushing all their demands
Leave suppliers standin’ on shifting sands
Customers have choices and internet too If we can’t reach a deal we’ll go for
option two Companies know it and they’re tryin’ to
stay One step ahead and out of the fray

Honda and Toyota proved the rule That profits will make new entrants drool
But barriers to entry are still quite high At least for small firms who’d like to try
What about substitutes to your own car? Like walking or riding the bus if it’s far?
They’re out there, sure, but vary by location, Since trains require tracks and a station.

I’m still cruisin down the road about sixty-five Thinkin bout the companies that made my ride
Now I realize I know how to break it down To understand the forces that shape Motown.
