A will is the cornerstone of any estate plan. A lot of people think “Why should I have
a will? I don’t have any assets, I barely have any money” Why is it important to have
a will?
A will is critically important. Because what it does is it allows you to name your executor,
someone who is responsible for carrying out your wishes, name beneficiaries who inherit
property. Name a guardian for any minor children.
People make mistakes and assume that they don’t have enough assets. If you have any
assets at all, you really should have a will. Because if you don’t, the provincial government
will determine who gets your money and how much each of them get.
How do you find a lawyer? Best thing to do is speak to your financial advisor. Talk to
them about what your needs and wishes are in terms of what you want to accomplish through
your estate plan and he or she will be able to recommend a lawyer or competent someone
in your area, at the right fee schedule that you can afford that will be able to handle
your estate planning in the most comprehensive way possible.
