Hello I'm Dr. Bernice Bernhard a New York State Licensed Psychologist practicing here
in New York City. This segment is called how to deal with stress when there are economic
difficulties. One of the things I want you to be aware of is when there is very serious
economic stress in one's life you may experience symptoms that may frighten you and I want
to let you know that given circumstances that are uncomfortable like losing a job or having
your house go into foreclosure you may have headaches, you may not sleep, you may have
a lot of stomach problems, you may find that you are not coping well with your family as
you had if you had children. You may find that you are starting to get depressed. These
are all very normal given economic stress. I can't find you a job or help you with your
mortgage but I can remind you that some of the breathing exercises that I always talk
about for square breathing and meditation daily does help. The other thing that will
help is realizing that you are not alone, band together with neighbors, drive together
to save gasoline, shop together, talk about it, do social things in a group because you
can't afford perhaps to do them on your own, babysit for each other, have parties by sharing
food. If you work together as a unit it can't solve the problem economically but it can
help socially. This is Dr. Bernice Bernhard. Thank you.
