- Let's talk about an ex-olympic sailing champion who succeeded
his transition into business with the creation of a skincare line for extreme conditions
- Daniel Kurbiel, an olympic class sailing champion in 2000,
becomes a strategy consultant - a classic reconversion.
He finally realizes that the family environment in which he grew up in holds something quite extraordinary.
What is this family environment ?
His father and mother are polar explorers and every summer for the past 30 years they mount a new expedition in the arctic.
They sail the cold arctic seas aboard their vessel , a small ice breaker, with scientists and Daniel who also participates from time to time to some of these expeditions.
The scientists aboard analyse arctic plants, and explain that the entire ecosystem, thrives in very hostile conditions.
And this is when Daniel tells himself that if these plants had to mutate or adapt themselves to live in such extreme conditions,
then they must contain properties that could be useful for the extreme conditions of city life.
And this becomes the brand's philosophy : These active ingredients extracted from the polar world and formulated into skincare protect your skin from the extreme conditions of city life.
These active ingredients aren't being picked or pillaged from the great North - the brand has existed for the past 10 years -
so some of these actives and molecules have been reproduced in labs thanks to biotechnologies.
Since Daniel is an ex-athlete, he first launched skincare of men, tested in extreme conditions. Skincare that protects the skin's hydrolipidic film which is aggressed by shaving.
He then launched a line of solar skincare because in the polar regions as funny as it will sound,
the sun is quite strong and in the summer never sets, therefore there is daylight all day long. So an extraordinary line of solar skincare was introduced.
And I wish this little red box to become as famous as the little German blue box. This is the Genuine Lapland cream that can really do it all !
And all based on plant extracts.
- And in this Lapland cream there are no animal derivatives in this product ?
- None whatsoever, the actives are all plant extracts. Take a look.
"I come from a family of polar explorers, scientists that have discovered and explored the arctic for the past 40 years
aboard small floating labs.
I grew up in this environment and I'm still living the adventure with our skincare brand.
The idea for the brand came from discussing with the scientists which were onboard our vessels.
They explained that two types of plants thrived in extreme regions - adaptogenic or extremophile plants - plants that mutate or plants that adapt to extreme conditions and climates.
We decided to study these plants to determine if their natural barrier properties could protect the skin from the city's harsh climate.
Our first adventure comes from meeting Maria Olech.
Maria is an eminent specialist of lichens -these plants that are a symbiosis of fungus and algae.
And from these algae, we extract thalassiosira antarctica which has exceptional barrier and regenerative properties for the treatment of men's skin, especially since it is irritated by shaving.
Our first line of skincare is to treat men's skin.
Our second cosmetic adventure is the discovery of the Siberian olive.
From the sea buckthorn family, this little berry contains 108 bioactive elements and 30 times more vitamin C than an orange.
The discovery came from reading about russian polar expeditions - their scientists didn't suffer from scurvy in these regions.
Scurvy was the biggest cause of mortality during these expeditions due to lack of vitamin C.
Since the Siberian Olive has 30 times more vitamin C, it was compensating this deficiency.
And today in cosmetology we know the benefits of vitamin C on the skin - it brings radiance to the skin's complexion.
The polar regions have the harshest sun conditions in the world.
First because the ozone layer above the poles is the thinnest, and second because the sun reverberates up to 90% more due to the ice and snow.
And lastly, we never think about this, but the sun never sets in the polar regions in the summer.
Your skin is exposed all day long to UV rays.
We discovered that the Riboflavin from the polar algae exposed to such harsh sunlight conditions offers very high UVA and UVB protection, while enhancing your capability to tan.
Our manufacturing process respects the environment.
We only source our actives from the polar regions, but the culture is done in France in labs under similar polar conditions.
We also employ the benefits of biotechnology to reproduce molecules.
This way we are capable of preserving these rare and precious resources from the polar world and still make scientific and polar cosmetology progresses."
- Our male viewers will rush to our website to learn more about this brand, and what about women ?
- And for women, we have this famous little red box, which in my opinion is really a product for the whole family -for both men and women. - Children ?
- Children too. And there is the very interesting line based on the Siberian Olive. Daniel explained that this berry works on the skin's complexion.
The brand has been around for almost 10 years and I wish this « Made in France » brand a long life !
