So I think that we have to understand that if we want real change we have to
change the whole system.
And that's what Occupy Wall Street is about.
Occupy Wall Street said we have to change the system
and that means we all set to change ourselves because we're part in the system.
In what there is an
idle no more, and in occupy
is a sense community, a sense that you're not on your own,
that people are helping you in the air can help each other and it sounds like very
simple but for people who grew up in this society
they never experienced it they never experienced feeling part something
You know so the most important thing now I think in diversity if the stand that
in other words if you see you're in a school in your own agency
and you see a person of color who's standing up for their rights and the
rights and other people you standing up for doing things differently
to reach into the community because they are from that community
and they know how to reach in the community you stand with them
you support them, you call out the people who are stopping them
from leading, that's the key now ...I think
Now this is why "Occupy" was amazing
they set up camps in the inner
city and they shared their ...
their space with the people who actually live on the streets in those communities
As a teacher you have power to change things,
you do. I know it doesn't feel that way sometimes
and especially when you're new teacher but in that classroom
you have the power to do what you think is right
...and if you instill the children that you're working with,
with that kind... you know it doesn't have to be political me
just that caring for each other
that empathy for with each other, that, love for each other
it'll change the world... that will change the world
bring up kids like that changes the world as well as teaching children to
think for themselves
to think critically, not to believe everything the
that'll change the world and so
in education in...
in universities, in working for change, it's important to support those
who have the least support in society not
through charity but you understanding it's only through their participation
that we're gonna change the world. Alice Walker said activism is the rent I pay
for living on the planet and I agree with that
I think that if you live on this planet in this time in history
you need to do something about it, it's not good enough just to live your life,
it's not good enough, there is too much injustice,
there's too much destruction, there's too much hate
there is too much attacks on everything that
...that we fought for, that our parents fought for that our grandparents fought for
you have to stand down you have to stand up every day
not to be like me and be an activist every day
but you have to stand up. I think and...
and it's not just a moral question it feels good to do it...
it really feels good to do it, you'll be
happier if you get active or if you even if you stand up at work
it feels good too. The only force that could overcome
greed and fear which is what our culture's based on
is love, and we all know that, we all know
what you'll do to help someone you love if they're sick of if they're in trouble or
they're broke and if you can feel that love for others,
for people you don't know well feel that lover compassion or empathy whatever
word you want to use
its transformative, it really is transformative
... and I really do believe I don't believe we can only do it
like I am not you know a spiritual person who says well just love your neighbor and
then everything will change.
No. Everything won't change, you have to fight the power as we use to say in 60's
and love your neighbors ...we need both parts of it.
Thank you.
