Hi my name is Krista Elvidge.
I work for the Canadian Coast Guard in the Maritimes services search and rescue branch
of the Maritimes region.

In my day to day role with the Canadian Coast Guard
I am responsible for the Inshore Rescue Boat program.
I manage and supervise 36 summer students and in the rest of my time
I spend that dedicating to the training center delivering training programs for small craft training.
This week at the Canadian Coast Guard base we are conducting a rhiot course
this involves a number of classroom and on water practical exercises.
On the water yesterday we conducted man over board or person in the water recoveries
and we also conducted the capsize reversal exercise.
During the patient recovery, man over board exercise we teach the students to recover
different types of patients from the water including an injured patient,
someone who is unconscious or hypothermic and someone who is uninjured and can help themselves into the boat.

During the capsize reversal exercise we simulate a capsize effort c in the water
and have the students range themselves around the vessel upon a capsize situation
and then we teach how to reright the vessel safely.

On the water this morning we conducted phasing exercises which is an exercise
to bring a vessel at speed alongside another moving vessel for patient transfer.

I started working with the Canadian Coast Guard in the Inshore Rescue Boat program
through the federal student work experience program and I did that program for a period of 9 years
before joining the rescue training center section of the Canadian Coast Guard.
So working in the Inshore Rescue Boat program was a wonderful experience.
It was the best summer job I have ever had, I got to be challenged every single day
and I was lucky enough to be able to go out there and be able to rescue and help other in need.
It’s hard to pin down my most memorable moment.
I’ve had many great days with the Canadian Coast Guard
and many rescues where I’ve had the opportunity to save others and teach others how to affect a proper rescue,
an effective rescue to help other in distress.
It’s the best job I’ve ever had.
The Canadian Coast Guard; it’s more than a career, it’s an adventure!
