Oh!
Didn't see you there! Hi I'm Sharmeel and welcome to Happy Hour.
Don't mind me, I was just updating my Facebook status on my Facebook app.
Sshh, don't tell my boss. I use my smartphone for so many great uses,
some that increases my productivity, and some that just decreases it.
So, the question for today is, what are you using your smartphone for right now?
We have all been in a dilemma on whether we should
accept our parent's Facebook requests. Recent studies have shown
that parent-child interaction using social media
will eventually lead to pro-social beahviour, which might change the way we
communicate with our
loved ones forever. Let's move on to other problems that we face in our daily lives
How about finding the right one? Are you willing to go out
on another blind date set up by your best friend? The controversial new dating app, Carrot
Dating", has caused a huge uproar recently. It is not the conventional dinner and
movie date
Men can actually offer bribes, that range from a cup of coffee
to an all expenses paid vacation in order to go out with young, attractive women.
Or how about when you lose your iphone and start panicking?
With the popular 'find my iphone' app, you can locate your ios device by using i-
cloud. If somebody steals your iphone, you can also lock it
so that they will have no access to your information.
We have so many problems, but luckily that is an app for that.
Let's move on to some other apps that cna prove to be useful
Summon Auntie is an app that will alert you if your car is going to get summoned;
Fancy, an app that works just like Pinterest, but the only difference is
that it lets you purchase everything you see on the website
Remote is also another app that literally turns your smartphone into a device
that lets you control other IOS devices in your home.
And the most amazing of all; an app that allows you to switch
on and off your lights! I have that great app with me right now
Let me show it to you.
The lights are supposed to switch on, hold on. The lights are supposed to switch on!
Oh wow, that really works!
With many other useful such ones that help us pay our bills,
and keep track of all our bank accounts; technology has advanced so much in recent years that not only is
communication easier
but also we can now run errands and other daily routines,
all from our handy device! And a quick Google search on the future of
technology
will lead you to wearable devices, such as the much-hyped Google Glass
which is basically a computer the in the form of spectacles
as well as watches that act as smartphones. Not only does it function without the use of
a touch screen interface
which means that you can record everything that you see hands-free
but also there are other interesting functions such as you sharing whatever it is that you see,
"live" with your friends. Which are all
the functions our smartphone does not have. And also these new wearable devices
are not just meant for pure entertainment. A new product developed by two University
of Nevada
Computer Scientists recently showcased their new product,
GIST, at a technology conference.
GIST, which stands for 'Gestural Interface for Remote
spatial perception will allow the blind to see what's around them.
This gesture-controlled wearable device will allow you to tell if there is a person or
object nearby
and also lets you measure the depth of a particular area.
There are other uses for technology too,
and the target audience are still in their 'onesies' and going to bed at
at 9 every night. Children nowadays are not playing with rubik's cubes and legos,
but with ipads. Parents purchase apps and videos
their children will be occupied for hours; with about 42% of toddlers
using ipads for entertainment
as well as brain stimulation. There is the 'crayon' app that allows kids to
but without all that mess that comes with them playing with
actual crayons. They also don't have to go to the actual lego store and buy the
Star Wars Collection.
for just $5.99 you can build whatever it is that you want
With all these great apps and devices for children,
the future generation may not even know what an actual toy
looks or feels like
So, do apps make us more productive or less productive?
They make you less productive!
I'm Sharmeel, and this has been another episode of Happy Hour.
