Erik: How often do you engage in networking activities and how effective are they in helping
your career develop?
Brett: I generally do one networking type thing a week, whether it is going to a lecture
or a just a dinner with somebody or a breakfast. Just talking to people informs me about the
market just as much as reading news if not more because people are on the ground and
doing things. Certainly in networking events they usually feature speakers. Those are very
timely. Going to networking events is always difficult because you have to get out there,
open up and shake hands with people you may or may not know. I sometimes force myself
to do it when I need to because I think it is important for my career - to enrich my
network will help me in the long run.
Erik: Now that you have been in real estate for more than ten years how do you see your
relationships coming into play day in and day out?
Brett: Well, it’s scary but as I look at more and more properties I always know who
to call to figure things out. I mean I say it is scary only because I have been in the
business a while and I kind of know a lot of people. So, I find it easier. I can get
to the bottom line a lot easier sometimes.
