\f0\fs24 \cf0 >>> DR. JAY K. HARNESS: Anti-estrogen therapy is another adjunctive therapy in addition
to the primary therapy. It\'92s used in patients whose breast cancers are estrogen-receptor
positive. What does that mean? Estrogen-receptors are on the surface of cancer cells and the
idea is to turn off those receptors so the cancer cell won\'92t continue to grow. \
\ So there are two big categories of anti-estrogen
pills: One, it\'92s been around for what, 40 years, called Tamoxifen and the anti-estrogen
pill, almost everyone has heard about it; and then a newer category that\'92s been around
for a little under a decade now, called aromatase inhibitors. \
\ The Tamoxifen therapy is typically used in
pre-menopausal women and the aromatase inhibitors, in which there are different kinds, are typically
used in post-menopausal women. The idea is to give the therapy for five years and to
turn off estrogen receptor positive cancer cells that may be elsewhere in the body, and
also if the breast is remaining because of a lumpectomy, decrease the chance that the
cancer can recur in the treatment breast, and also potentially have a prophylactic effect
on the non-treatment breast. \ \
