actions are rushing to talk about gun control
going to draw a first because there were some momentous things
that happened
on
the
don't control from today
and that is that there was a motion for cloture
on the four
of the senate on a bill that would
close the door insurable required universal background checks
across the board including for the forty percent gone sells where they are no
longer where they are currently
not
available where they're crowing not required
and
uh...
harry reed spoke very very emotionally when they finally broke the sixty votes
racial
they were and number of republican senators that were threatening to pull
them as they were threatening to filibuster this
but of course senator john mccain
uh... spoke up against them
get first let's listen to harry reid speaking very passionately about the
issue of
universal background checks
on the senate floor this past week
sometimes
people these that a passion
person handgun do bad things with it
this president
even as my dad did killed himself
waiting a few days
making a simple background check
everytime dennis who was common sense
you could hear the motion harry's voice and that's not something you say or
think harry reid not your typical
emotional
blustery politician
and yet keep august his voice broke when recalling
the image of his father's suicide and of course in america we do have more
suicides and dad spied on accident as a result of
perhaps having gone for two available and i don't really make rude
that they're gone laws who are
make them more restrictive
suicides declined by sixty percent
again sixty percent suicide one of the big issues of gun violence in this
country and it's something that we don't talk about also enough and there's harry
reid a man with a b rating from the n_r_a_
not not considered a
dawn hallock
or rather considered someone
who in fact in the past has been a huge champion of gun rights perhaps no better
spokesman in that regard essentially saying
there's a wait time factor here
it's not just about keeping an eye hands of criminals and mentally ill
course we're talking about the gun bill then moved to the floor for debate in
the senate this week
and
became really
that that
pair speeches like those of her reading stop republican senators
from openly announcing gleefully that they were about to put this bill on hold
from even going up for debate
here's senator jim risch republican from idaho
or you and your fellow senators threatening to filibuster
we're not threatening a filibuster we're going to filibuster senator james ratio
idaho told us he and the thirteen other republicans will filibuster any
expansion of gun control laws because they believe that laws now on the books
already violate the constitutional right to bear arms
where are you on expanding background checks
i've got real reservations i don't think that the background checks are nearly as
effective as what people are arguing
what you're doing is you're really penalizing
good law-abiding citizens that want to all
a firearm when you're not penalized the people that should be paid senator
okay you're penalizing not good at law-abiding citizens who want a by
firearms because the folks that
that or mentally ill that will get them regardless of the bag rejects appears to
be a lot of their of course in a rare moment of intra-party isn't ascension
john mccain the senior senator from arizona
essentially criticizes republican colleagues publicly on the sunday talk
shows for threatening to hold up this bill
generating i will have what your thought on a filibuster on this week i think in
fact i don't understand a purpose united states senate this to debate
and to vote and to let the people know where we stand here in our age
republicans barnwell i would not only cricket i don't understand what do we
afraid of
senator john mccain is socially opposing
filibustering the the viewed on reform laws
and impact it was his voice that lets sixteen republican senators to vote to
move for cloture
including senator john mccain he's been someone who stood up
for gun control laws in the past and certainly someone who does not like who
who has a sense of honor traditionally someone who who at least
claims to to respect the the law making process and and the process of of
dignity involved in the senate
