I want to thank Patricia Caicedo
for this innovative program.
Thank you to Centre d'Art Santa Mònica.
and to my wonderful colleagues.
First ot all I want to explain
a little bit of my project
and my trajectory.
I came from Brazil
as Patricia said.
I have lived 15 years
in Barcelona. I had
the dream to breeze
the air of the cradle of art.
This was my dream.
And it was a big surprise,
Because I saw a very
inspiring city.
And I wished to stay longer.
So I found a job as
a graphic designer
I studied Graphic Design.
And also Industrial Design.
I spent a lot of years
in Marketing, working
as a graphic designer.
But I have always
worked in paralel and in my head
I always had a project.
Since my childhood
I played with materials found on
the street and made necklaces
with old objects.
And in Barcelona I did the same.
Apart from my job, I made
bags with mailing tubes...
And I used to collect all kind
of materials I found interesting
from an aesthetic point of view.
I was not saving the world
I thought: this material is beautiful!
How come it is going to the waste?
And so I collected things
Like wine corks, cans...
And then in 2001
I decided to go forward
and I described
my project: Ciclus.
This is not a design project
It is more a life project.
I put here all my energy,
my illusion, my heart.
My first line of products
is jewellery made of waste
graphic material and other objects.
Always with this industrial
idea of using existing things
And mixing the industrial
with hand made objects.
And after this first collection
I was invited to some
exhibitions with other
young designers in Barcelona.
And then my designs were in
the shops of some museums
and in other shops.
And these companies came to me.
they wanted me to design for them
some projects and things
that had to do with wine.
Like presents for New Year's Eve.
These projects inspired me
to design in a more personal way
I designed not only on assignment
but for myself, based on
my observation of normal life.
For example you collect
you best moments, your corks
on this tray with pricles.
to collect your best moments.
With this corks you make a tray.
It is you who collect them.
The tray is made of stainless steel.
Well, this is only an example.
This comes from my observation
of normal like. I saw that many people
collected corks in the kitchen.
I collected corks too
and even wrote the date on them.
And this way the idea came
to have a product that is very
practical and beautiful at the same time.
These are some projects
in the jewellery.
With these projects I started being
published in different magazines.
Through internet everything
works very fast.
and it went from one web to anofher.
Then I won a prize for design
and innovation in London.
And other prizes in Brazil.
They described me as eco-designer
sustainable designer.
When I started I was
described as hippy. Now I am cool.
I went suddenly
from one point to another.
Anyway, I find it interesting
Sustainability is very
important in my work.
It is basically some methodology,
It is not a style or
a way of designing.
It is like everything is
eco at the moment, or bio.
But I come from a culture
where everybody uses and
reuses all the time.
From there I got my way
of observing these materials
and transforming them.
But sustainability is like
buying some ecological rice.
Every kind of rice has its own flavor.
The same with design.
Every design has its own style.
My flavor is different form
other sustainable designs.
But always respecting
sustainability. And trying to
to with the minimum process
and materials, the maximum
of sensations and uses.
This is my style.
And currently I am teaching
classes about Design and Innovation.
I am very happy about it.
Apart from designing objects
for companies, I am
learning a lot from the classes I give
And this is very rewarding.
Also I have exposed
in the Milan Salon, in Italy.
which is very important
for my product.
And through Milan
I got to learn the who hunter
of the MoMa in New York.
And he just selected
my Best Moments' tray
so that it will be part
of the Museum's catalogue.
I could not be happier.
And in less than a year,
the tray is a already a best seller
I would like to explain that this
is the fruit of a long, long way.
I have dedicated all my life and
I have worked a lot.
And one day the fruits are ripe.
I'm very happy to be here with you.
Thank you very much.
Now, come sit down with me.
We would need a coffee now...
You explain everything with
a lot of enthusiasm and energy.
With so much happiness as if 0:07:58.650,1193:02:47.295 Thank You, Tati.
everything was so easy.
But you came here with a
little bag full of dreams.
I would like to know about
your arrival to Barcelona.
and how living in Catalunya
did inspire you. How did
living in Barcelona
reflect in your work.
Well, Barcelona is a city
that inspires anyone.
It has an atmosphere of...
It's very difficult to explain
because... you feel it,
and that's it. I know very few
people who came here and didn't
feel happy in this city.
Because it's warm, welcoming.
It has a magical atmosphere.
This is a city that breathes
and transpires art.
Barcelona is like that.
I came here with a very
different culture, and this
made me observe everything
in a fresher way.
I have many products related to wine.
But wine is not part of my culture.
In Brazil it's beer, caipirinha...
So wine was an inspiration
a new culture.
Did I answer your question?
I think you did answer.
didn't she?
Somethings that I find very interesting
in your designs, in your work
is how you use absolutely everything.
Does it have something
to do that you were born in Brazil?
You try to transform,
to use everything at hand..
Well, I think that more than reuse
what I want is that people
interact with these objects.
that they re-use these objects.
My products are not finished...
People have to finish them.
They put the second part.
So I think this is more than
sustainability and recycling.
My coming from Brazil
has something to do with this.
People there recycle things
because they have no money.
So I think it is a mixture
of everything I have lived.
In Brazil eco-designers are
everywhere, on the streets.
So an eco-designer is no big news.
But the way you transform objects,
the way you look at them...
this is very personal.
With a bottle I can make an object
and you will make another one.
Because we look at things differently.
I like this minimalist design.
and this part doesn't come from Brazil.
You said that perhaps the
Brazilian part in your work is emotion.
How do you express that?
Yes, because my products are
very simple in appearance.
but they transmit a lot of emotion.
I have this simplicity story...
minimalistic... This is a reflect
of my own life in my work.
Everything has to be very simple
But it is charged with emotion.
And you can see it
in the product.
I want to ask you something.
You talked about different places
where you had been.
You mentioned some of the most
important venues for a designer.
How did the internet
contribute to the projection
of your work?
Well, this was really most important,
because I didn't have a lot of money.
But after one or two publications
of my work, I received
sometimes like 3000 emails!
Only for a project.
For one of my lamps I received
3000 emails from all over
the world. And this was
thanks to the internet.
Without the internet I would
never had access to these people
without this tool that we have nowadays
That's the universe! Our generation
we have this tool. And this makes
everything a lot easier.
The articles, the prizes...
all comes from these articles
these magazines about my work.
When you go around the world
you say you are a designer
from Barcelona.
And you represent us in
the MoMa and all over the world.
What do you feel, to be an ambassador
from Barcelona, when
you were born in Rio de Janeiro?
I don't know. I think this is richer.
I really feel like a citizen of the world.
I am Brazilian, I feel Catalan
I feel a citizen of the world. Sometimes
they say "the Catalan designer"
or the Spanish designer...
¡No, she is Brazilian!, say my friends.
I don't care. I love it. This can
get to many people and Ilove to share
this experience with so many people.
I am currently in a very interesting
project called "Tapas: Spanish
Design for Foods", with Ferran Adrià
and it will go also all over the world
till 2015. It is about gastronomy and
design. And there are designers from
Spain, but not necessarily Spanish.
Ialso represent Spain in other parts
of the world. Like a Brazilian designer
or whatever. I am a Designer
and that's it.
Thank you Tati for sharing
this beautiful story.
