now we're all the time from the service healers who had to give tax breaks
to these poor corporations because electrical to have known
you give them huge tax breaks and will create jobs for you
well that's exactly what marathon Petroleum promise the city of Detroit
and in return back in 2007 when they made a promise
they got equivalent to 100 and seventy five million dollars in tax breaks
from the city of Detroit so at the time
their senior vice president said as we discuss job creation
please understand that we will do what we can to hire
qualified Detroit residence any
for small at he didn't say was voluntary with the %um the tax exemptions in some
cities
Detroit in demand it was mandatory the said it was a bond here that don't do
whatever they can
but they said no no we're gonna go further I will put money into education
because Sony great employees
he said it is our intention note the words by the way always the legalese
is our intention to work closely with the Detroit Workforce Development
Department
and a local institution of higher education develop curriculum and offer
training
for interested Detroit residents well they did
the they actually put in a hundred fifty-four thousand dollars
towards 37 scholarships a stab at
now by gotta 175 million dollars
might i in to get tiny tiny percentage ever 254,000 and put it over
the Detroit higher education why might they hire any of those people like email
those scholarships
new they said look if it was a tie
between Detroit worker and someone else we give the edge to Detroit worker but I
guess we never had a tie
well you know we let's be fair now
back in 2007 they had 320 workers in that plant
and today they have 514 workers oh wait did a lot of jobs
and all those how many are Detroit residents third
whoop-de-doo by the way before the tax breaks
15 or Detroit residents so
$475 million dollars they added a whopping
15 workers some quick math on that I believe that that is over
10 million dollars per worker now
you think it's a good idea to offer hundreds millions dollars in tax
subsidies to corporations
in the hopes that the goodness in their hearts they will ball entirely
hire people in your city mean
perhaps that's not how capitalism works so
the reality is a lot times the city's
the giveaway these huge tax subsidies intake in our pockets
ok their own residence not because the actually think it's gonna trickle-down
not because they actually think that you know you're gonna hire employees there
the state in New Jersey campbell's got it huge
subsidy from chris Christie they've fired workers
in a state of New Jersey they got the chemo so subsidy
anyway so it's totally counterproductive
but that's not why chris Christie doesn't that's not why the
the politicians in Detroit didn't they do it because they get money from the
corporation's Lebowski
that cellmark's if you allow corporations to spend unlimited money in
politics
they will buy an unlimited number of politicians perhaps the answer
is to take money out of politics so that's why some people
as well look at Wolf Pack you know that's just pack we formed
to make sure we get money out of politics and get a constitutional
amendment so you can do at the federal level you can do it in Detroit can do to
New Jersey
gate the but one other parts the amendment is public financing of
elections
but oftentimes concerns will say well I don't want my taxpayer money go to
politicians
do you just lost $275 million dollars in taxpayer money
firm dead broke Detroit when they gave it away for a couple thousand dollars in
campaign contributions probably
so when you don't publicly financed elections and they don't work for us
they work for someone else
idk also so much more money
and now of course the traits bankrupt because they were robbed blind
there was many other problems in Detroit but this is certainly among them
get money out of politics otherwise we lose on
every issue 175 million dollars for
15 jobs what i'd joke
wealth cash back to cart
