My name is Gustavo, I am 25 years old. I've lived in São Paulo my whole life.
I am a journalist and editor of an online teen magazine.
I grew up here, work here. Have all my friends and family here.
It makes me really connected to the city.
São Paulo is very sunny, but it always rains in the afternoon.
It is nice. You can walk around without sweating too much.
12 million people live in São Paulo.
In the entire metropolitan area are some 18 million people.
It is the biggest city in South America and the 7th largest in the world.
I love this city, even if it is a crazy mess.
We are now at Minhocão, an above-ground expressway.
There are loads of cars during the day.
Minhocão was built in 1970 to ease the traffic.
It is shut down every day after nine in the evening.
People come here to bike and jog. It is also closed on Sundays.
It is a nice urban place in messy São Paulo.
I come here every Sunday for a bike ride. It’s really cool.
Not many tourists visit São Paulo.
People come here to find work. It has always been that way.
Every company wants to be here.
Because of that the city developed...
a very important cultural role.
That is what makes São Paulo so rich.
We will go see a few places like the Mercadomi Municipal.
It is the biggest and most important market in the city.
In São Paulo you can find any kind of food you want.
This city market, the Mercadomi Municipal...
has all kinds of spices, fruit and meat.
Pretty much everything. And it's all fresh.
Lots of important chefs from the best restaurants in São Paulo...
buy their supplies here.
This is one big piece of cheese.
It weighs 115 kilos. It’s bigger than me.
The market is a really important meeting point in São Paulo.
It is crowded throughout the day. Especially around lunchtime...
people come here to eat food like this.
This is a mortadella sandwich. It is made with cheese.
This is a cod fish parcel...
Inside fried dough. It is a popular Chinese dish.
This restaurant serves the best ones so this is what we’re having.
São Paulo is a concrete jungle. I won’t argue with that.
It is also very Brazilian, colourful and vibrant.
The centre is very well maintained.
There are a few really good parks.
Like the Ibirapuera park, designed by Oscar Niemeyer...
Brazil’s most important architect.
A couple of blocks away is the Buenos Aires park.
Even if it is a concrete jungle, there is also lots of green.
It is difficult to imagine how big São Paulo is.
So I brought you here to the Skye Bar.
From here you have a 360-degree view of the city.
You can see how big it is.
The Ibirapuera park is right there.
And behind me is Paulista Avenue.
São Paulo has a few business districts. Paulista is the main one.
There is also the place we are going now: Vila Madalena. It’s right there.
There’s lots of artists and bands.
A lot is happening here, like street and urban art.
Art and culture is what makes a city...
relevant and important and a nice place to be.
Vila Madalena is located nearby the University of São Paulo...
the biggest and most important university in the country.
In the late 1970s students started moving to this area.
That’s when it all started.
This neighbourhood is known for all its artists.
It has small art galleries and shops.
One of them is Choque Cultural, an art gallery.
It is the hippest and coolest gallery in São Paulo.
It is almost ten years old.
It started out as an art collective for artists involved in...
street art, urban interventions and tattoo art.
They brought everything together to develop themselves
This is the space where you can buy these people’s art.
The artists here are very involved in the politics in São Paulo.
There are so many things that can be improved in the city.
In some way this is what they are trying to do here.
Art is a great first step for change.
I’ll now take you to see more art, but in an open-air space.
You’re going to like it.
This is Batman's Alley or Rua Beco de Batman.
It is great that you can transform a public space into an art gallery.
Putting art on the street.
This cool place started around 30 years ago.
Someone found a graffiti of Batman on the wall.
After that all the graffiti artists started coming here.
It became an open-air gallery for modern graffiti artists.
All the cool artists from São Paulo are here.
It’s a really cool place.
Vila Madalena gets crowded from midday.
It goes on until four or five in the morning.
This is where young and hip people come together in São Paulo.
They say that Paris was exciting in the 1920s...
London in the 1960s and New York in the 1980s.
That's what São Paulo is now.
I love being a part of it and experiencing it.
We started our day at Minhocão and went to the city market Mercadomi.
We went to the Skye bar and walked around Vila Madalena.
Now we are at Sunset Square.
Which has a great view of the sunset and the city.
I hope you had fun walking around and getting to know São Paulo...
I hope you come back here and have a really great time.
