I'm Maddie.
I'm a junior design major, and I'm originally from
Attleboro, Massachusetts.
I'm Nick, senior design major, and I'm from Milford,
New Hampshire.
Design to me is problem solving in a creative manner.
That's my definition of design.
Communication is definitely a very big part of design.
One thing that surprised me was how small
the classrooms were.
I went to a very big high school where there were a lot of
teachers that didn't know my name,
a lot of kids I graduated with that didn't...
I didn't know personally.
But there are some really small classes,
and it's really good, you know?
Like, teachers, like, remember your project.
They remember a question you had last week.
There's, like, the real good sense of community
that I think in bigger schools you don't get.
My foundation year was great.
It was a lot of drawing and composition as well,
and a lot of color, which was huge to know,
because I use color in all my work.
It also taught me how to draw, which was good,
because I never took any drawing courses
prior to the foundation year at AIB.
In high school I didn't take, really, any art courses.
Like, I wasn't really much into drawing and all that,
so I was very scared.
But it actually was a very easy transition, you know?
They explained all the mediums you would use,
and I started playing with the digital mediums early on.
And I think it was definitely necessary.
I totally feel like I'm ready for the real world,
just because all the questions I've had about projects,
or how to deal with, like, a client, or how to just
deal with people and networking, anything like that,
all the professors at AIB are, like...
they're really spot-on, close with you.
If you've got a question, you can email them
and they'll get right back to you.
You can even call some of the professors.
It's, like, really, like, a family, almost.
And, like, it's a really great experience.
I've sent some emails at 4:00 in the morning
that get answered rather quickly.
So, yeah, they're on board.
It's definitely not as easy as you might think.
It challenges you, and it's good, fun work.
If you're putting in the effort,
you produce some awesome work.
And it's just... if you've got the drive to do it,
then, like, that's what you've got to do.
MADDIE YOUNG: Don't narrow your portfolio.
You know, if you're going to do design
and you're interested in photo, interested in drawing,
like, keep working on that, keep doing that.
Like, that's only going to make your work better,
more interesting.
You know, don't limit yourself at all.
