In this video, I'm going to demonstrate my BacktopVR setup that I put together on a relatively
light budget.
So what is BacktopVR?
Well the core of the system uses a laptop in a backpack, hence the name. I'm using a
lenovo Y570. The other essential piece is a head mounted display. For that I have the
Vuzix 1200VR. Of course we need controllers as well. I am using the Nintendo Wiimote with
MotionPlus, and also the Sony Playstation Move Navigator. Finally I've got a plastic
gun attachment for the Wiimote, and a mesh backpack to hold the laptop.
Now if you put all those pieces together with the right software, you end up with a fully
wearable Virtual Reality rig. Since you are not tethered to a computer, you have the full
freedom to move around as you please.
The headtracker on the 1200VR will control rotation in the game, using a mouse emulator
I wrote called ioVR. The Wiimote will also be used to control the gun, but its more for
fine tuning the aim. The Playstation Move Navigator will emulate the keyboard, mapped
to movement and certain key actions. I am using the MotionInJoy driver for this. Finally,
I have the TriDef Ignition driver which renders the game in stereoscopic 3D.
In this demonstration I will be playing Hard Reset, which is a pretty cool cyberpunk shooter
for the PC.
