Hi my name is Dave Ellis and I am a counselor at Johnson County Community College. If you
are interested inpursuing a degree in business there are many opportunities here at JCCC.
There are three options for associates degree's at JCCC. Number one you can get a degree in
business administration. Two marketing and management. Or three entrepreneurship. Each
degree consists of sixty four credit hours. These programs are set up with the idea that
you will be working in a business related field immediately after completing the two
year program. Many graduates of these programs find employment in a retail setting. Others
may already be working in the field and a degree would allow them to advance in their
organisation. The associates degree's in business are not usually set up to transfer well to
most four year colleges and universities. For example like KU or Emporia or UMKC. Because
most of the business courses specifically are not transferable and there are very few
general education courses. However there are programs in the Kansas City area that will
accept our two year degree's to complete a bachelors degree program. Some of these include
Ottowa university, Mid America Nazarene university, Baker University and Friends University. A
complete list of these colleges is available in the counseling center. If you are considering
transferring to a four year degree to get a degree in business, then it is wise to visit
with a counselor early on to talk about whether to pursue an associates degree in a business
related field. For the students who decided not to obtain an associates degree and plan
to continue at a four year college for a bachelors degree and business, Johnson County offers
several classes that consistently transfer to most four year programs. Those classes
include English 121 Comp 1, English 12, Composition 2. Speech 121 which is public speaking. Certain
humanities courses, certain social science courses, accounting 121 which is accounting
1, accounting 122 accounting 2. Accounting 2 22 managerial accounting. Also other classes,
Econ 230 econ 1, Econ 231 econ 2. A computer course, math 171 college algebra and possibly
even more math after that. Again if you are considering a degree in business it is very
important that you meet with a counselor early in your time at Johnson County We'll help
and point you to the right direction.
