In this episode of Pocket science, we will learn about blood.
what is blood anyway?
it's a red liquid, that comes out of our finger wen we cut ourselves,
this is true
but what is blood if we take a closer look at it?
Blood is basically made out of two basic ingredients.
cells and plasma
First, let's take a look at the blood cells.
We know that there are 3 main cell groups.
ERYTROCYTES
LEUKOCYTES
and TROMBOCYTES (platelets)
Each group has its own job and they all are a necessity for our living.
We will take a closer look at each individual cell in next few episodes.
Now let's take a look at blood plasma.
When they examine your plasma in the lab, that is just blood without cells.
Simply they take your blood and then remove cells with a technique called CENTRIFUGATION.
In this procedure, they put the blood sample in a special device which spins it in circles, really fast.
That way cells will sit on the bottom and plasma is ready for examining.
It might occur, that they need to examine your blood serum for biochemical examination.
What is serum?
There is a certain protein in plasma, called FIBRINOGEN.
It is produced in liver
And its main job is to aid with the coagulation of blood, by turning into tiny strings of FIBRIN.
Those strings are then used as a frame for a blood clot.
So let us return to previous topic.
So plasma is blood without cells.
But if we also take that fibrinogen out of it,
we get SERUM.
This is all for today, in the next few epiodes we will take a closer look at each individual blood cell and it's workings.
