Good afternoon. I'm Floren Gomis.
I'm a graduate student at Universidad Autonoma de Baja California.
In this project, I'm an apprentice and assistant to my partner, Jonathan Escobar.
I set traps and I am a photographer in case...
...we can't identify a particular species...
...with the photos we can identify them later.
I am also cataloging the species of the area.
My name is Jonathan Escobar Flores.
I currently work at Universidad Autonoma de Baja California...
...as a professor and associate reseacher...
...in field studies.
In this project, we want to know on general terms...
...the diversity of the site.
What we did was basically...
...investigate and try to identify...
...various groups of fauna like birds, reptiles, and mammals.
We had great success despite the season.
As we know, this is a season when...
...conditions are very cold...
...and many species are hibernating or...
...remain relatively inactive.
That's why it's so difficult to study.
But it's important to have different points of comparison...
...amongst the different seasons.
Addressing the second question...
...what is an UMA?
Well, the definition of an UMA is...
...a plan for the handling and conservation and...
...use of wildlife.
Basically, it's what steps you will take...
...in how you use your resources.
That's the definition under Mexican law.
In reality, an UMA doesn't have responsibilities...
...just how to use your resources and there are no obligations...
...that one acquires when they register an UMA.
For example, if an UMA were a company...
...what is your merchandise?
How are you going to sell it? What are your production methods?
That's what an UMA is.
More specifically...
...what we have found here...
...is that Rancho San Gregorio is really...
...very diverse, especially because...
...of the number and variety of vegetation.
That's why we have an extreme diversity of birds.
Preliminary results: more than 20 species.
And more than 10 species of mammals.
Reptiles are extremely diverse. I don't even know!
This is an inicator of the balance of the ecosystem.
And that the people are contributing...
...to the conservation of the individuals and...
...the diversity of the ecosystem.
A large part of the work we did with Floren...
...and the people who helped us, who I thank in this video...
...was to work with a new technology...
...the famous photo-trap that...
...basically consists of a camera and motion sensors that...
...when an animal passes, it detects and photographs it.
We used to use flash cameras.
We found these to be inadequate...
...because they disturbed the animal.
So, using these infrared lenses...
...that are nearly indetecable by the animal...
...it can photograph it without harming it.
That's basically a photo-trap.
We don't only detect movements but also...
...we have weather sensors...
...which give us more information about what...
...we're studying in the area.
For this study, we hid about 10 cameras...
...which is considered a good cross section.
For the moment, we photographed the grey fox...
...and many species of birds such as vultures.
